意味を確認して音読しましょう。

 

(111) premonition 「予感、虫の知らせ」

She had a premonition that something bad was going to happen.
→彼女は何か悪いことが起こりそうな予感がした。

 

◎I have a premonition about ~「~の予感がする」。この言い回しも覚えておきましょう。something badの語順に注意。(例)I'd like to eat something spicy tonight.「今夜は何かスパイシーなものが食べたい」。

 

(112) inquiry 「問い合わせ、質問」

I'm sorry for the delay in responding to your inquiry.
→お問い合わせへのご返信が遅くなり申し訳ございません。

 

◎動詞はinquire「問い合わせる」。(例)I would like to inquire about the stock availability for your new sneakers.「新しいスニーカーの在庫状況をお知らせください」。delay「遅れ」、respond to ~「に返信する」.

 

(113) bigwig 「お偉方、大物」

I rarely talk to the bigwigs at my company.
→会社でお偉方と話すことはめったにない。

 

◎「上司、お偉方」はhigher-upでも表現できます。「上層部、経営陣」はupper managementと言います。rarely「めったにない」。

 

(114) pros and cons 「賛否両論」

They weighed the pros and cons before making a decision.
→決定をする前に、彼らは賛成意見と反対意見を慎重に検討した。

 

◎weigh「よく考える」。opinions for and against ~「~に対する賛成と反対意見」も覚えておきましょう。

 

(115) wisdom tooth 「親知らず」

My wisdom tooth is growing out.
→親不知が生えてきてる。

 

◎「前歯」はfront tooth、「奥歯」はback tooth、「犬歯」はcanine toothですね。「親知らずを抜いてもらう」はhave one's wisdom tooth / teeth removedと言います。

 

(116) asset 「長所、美点」

Meg's cheerful personality is one of her assets.
→メグの明るい性格が彼女の長所の1つだ。

 

◎assetには「資産、財産(複数形)」、「役に立つもの」という意味もあります。(例)He's going to be a great asset to us.「彼は我々にとって大きな戦力になる」。

 

(117) bomb 「大失敗」

The concert tonight was a bomb.
→今夜のコンサートは全然だめだった。

 

◎bombは動詞としても使えます。(例)The plan bombed.「その計画は失敗した」。blunder「大失敗、へま」も覚えておきましょう。

 

(118) alibi 「アリバイ」

His alibi is supported by many witnesses.
→彼のアリバイは多くの目撃者によって裏付けられている。

 

◎alibiは「*アラバイ」と発音(*印はアクセントの位置)。「彼にはアリバイがない」はHe has no alibi.と言います。

 

(119) glare 「まぶしい光」

There's so much glare I can hardly see.There's so much glare I can hardly see.
→まぶしくてほとんど見えない。

 

◎glareとIの間にthatが省略されています。glareは動詞としても使えます。(例)The sun is glaring.「太陽がぎらぎら照りつけている」。

 

(120) cramp 「(筋肉の)痙攣」

Oops! I got a cramp in my leg.
→あっ!足がつった。

 

◎crampを動詞として用いて、My leg cramped up.とも言えます。
