意味を確認して音読しましょう。

 

(101) applause 「拍手」

Let's hear a big round of applause for Prof. Brown.
→ブラウン教授に大きな拍手をお送りください。

 

◎hear a big round of applauseの文字通りの意味は「盛大な拍手喝采を聞く」。動詞はapplaud「拍手を送る」です。(例)All the audience got up and started applauding.「聴衆全員が立ち上がり拍手を始めた」。

 

(102) prosperity 「成功、繁栄」

A double chin and spare tire used to be signs of prosperity and health.
→二重あごと腰回りの贅肉はかつて成功と健康の証だった。

 

◎prosperityの動詞はprosper「繁栄する」、形容詞はprosperous「繁栄している」。(例)You're looking prosperous these days.「最近、羽振りがよさそうだね」。spare tire「腰回りについた贅肉」。(例)I wish I could get rid of my spare tire.「腰回りの贅肉が取れたらな」。

 

(103) judgment 「判断、判定」

He was right in his judgment.
→彼の判断は正しかった。

 

◎judge「判断する」、misjudge「判断を誤る」、misjudgment「誤った判断」も覚えておきましょう。judge(名詞)には「裁判官、目利き」の意味もあります。(例)He thinks he's a good judge of character, but actually he just labels people.「彼は自分には人を見る目があると思っているが、実際は人にレッテルを貼っているだけ」。

 

(104) existence 「存在、実在」

People these days take for granted the existence of the Internet.
→最近の人たちはインターネットの存在を当たり前だと思っている。

 

◎動詞はexistです。(例)Do you believe that ghosts really exist?「君は本当に幽霊が存在すると信じているのか?」。take for granted「当たり前だと思う」。

 

(105) curfew 「門限」

I have to be back before my curfew.
→門限前に戻らないと。

 

◎「門限を破る」はbreak curfewですね。(例)She broke curfew and got scolded by her father.「彼女は門限を破り、父親に叱られた」。

 

(106) gab 「無駄話、おしゃべり」

People say I have the gift of gab.
→僕は口が達者だと人は言う。

 

◎「口が達者」をhave the gift of gab「おしゃべりの才能がある」で表現。gabは動詞としても使えます。(例)Stop gabbing and get back to work right away.「無駄話はやめて、すぐ仕事に戻りなさい」。

 

(107) entertainment 「娯楽、楽しみ」

The more you spend on entertainment, the less you'll have for the future.
→娯楽にお金を使えば使うほど、将来への蓄えがますます少なくなる。

 

◎The more ~, the less … 「~ほど、ますます …」の構文に注意。動詞entertainは「接待する」の意味でも使えます。(例)I'll have to entertain our clients tonight.「今夜クライアントの接待をしなくてはいけないの」。

 

(108) tendency 「傾向」

He has a tendency to go along with what other people say.
→彼は他の人たちの言うことに同調する傾向がある。

 

◎動詞はtendです。(例)He tends to be rude.「彼には無礼なところがある」。go along with ~「~に同調する、~に賛成する」。

 

(109) print 「印刷された文字・活字」

The newspaper print was so small he couldn't read it.
→その新聞の文字がとても小さかったので彼は読めなかった。

 

◎so small (that) he couldn't ~のthatが省略されています。fine print「細かい活字」を使った例文を挙げておきます。He seems to have trouble reading fine print lately.「最近、彼は細かい活字を読むのに苦労しているみたい」。

 

(110) slump 「不景気」

The auto industry is suffering from a slump.
→自動車業界が不況に喘いでいる。

 

◎「スランプにある」はbe in a slumpと言います。(例)He seems to be in a slump.「彼はスランプみたいだね」。suffer from ~「~に苦しむ」。
