意味を確認して音読しましょう。

 

(121) bankruptcy 「倒産」

Last year there were more instances of bankruptcy than ever before.
→昨年の倒産件数は過去最高だった。

 

◎be on the bankruptcy「倒産寸前である」も一緒に覚えておきましょう。「倒産する、破産する」は形容詞bankruptを使ってgo bankruptと言います。instance「例、場合」。

 

(122) buddy 「仲間、相棒」

He's one of my drinking buddies.
→彼は僕の飲み仲間の１人なんだ。

 

◎my old college buddyは「大学時代の級友」の意味。「飲み会」はdrinking session、「新年会」はNew Year's party、「忘年会」はyear-end partyと言います。

 

(123) token 「印、証拠」

This is just a little token of my appreciation.
→これはほんの感謝の印です。

 

◎「友情の印」はa token of one's friendshipで表現できます。appreciation「感謝」の代わりにgratitudeも使えます。

 

(124) self-control 「自制心」

No matter what happens, don't lose your self-control.
→どんなことがあっても、取り乱してはいけない。

 

◎no matter what ～「たとえ～でも」。「平常心を保つ / 失う」はkeep / lose one's calmと言います。

 

(125) palm 「手のひら」

I get sweaty palms when I'm nervous.
→私は緊張すると手のひらに汗をかく。

 

◎sweatyはsweat「汗」の形容詞形。「手相」はpalm readingと言います。（例）Do you believe in palm reading?「手相を信じる？」。

 

(126) policy 「政策」

Apology is the best policy.
→謝罪が最善の策。

 

◎apology「謝罪」、apologize「謝罪する」。～ is the best policy.は～に別の名詞を使って応用できます。（例）Honesty is the best policy.「正直が一番」、 Daily effort is the best policy.「日々の努力が最善の策」、Running away is the best policy.「ここは逃げるとするか」。

 

(127) resistance 「抵抗」

His proposal met with stiff resistance from the committee.
→彼の提案は委員会から激しい抵抗にあった。

 

◎動詞はresistです。（例）I know I shouldn't look at it, but I can't resist.「それを見ちゃいけないってわかってるけど、見ちゃうんだな」。meet with 「（反対、拒否などに）あう」、stiff「激しい、強い」。

 

(128) scenario 「シナリオ」

What's the worst-case scenario?
→最悪の場合のシナリオとは何なんだ？

 

◎scenarioの発音は「スィ*ネリオゥ」。例文をもう一つ。I never imagined a scenario like this.「こんなことになるとはね」。worst-case「最悪の場合の」、best-case「一番いい場合の」。

 

(129) recommendation 「推薦」

He's my recommendation for project manager.
→プロジェクト・マネージャーに彼を推薦します。

 

◎役職名project managerに冠詞（a,the）は不要。「何かお勧めはありますか？」はDo you have any recommendations?、あるいは、動詞recommendを使って、What do you recommend?と言えばいいでしょう。ちなみに、「推薦状」はa letter of recommendationですね。

 

(130) hay fever 「花粉症」

I'm showing all the signs of hay fever.
→花粉症の兆候が全部出ている。

 

◎「花粉」はpollen、「花粉数」はpollen countと言います。（例）I hear that the pollen is especially bad this year.「今年は特に花粉がひどいそうだ」。花粉症の兆候と言えば……It gives me a stuffy nose and itchy, watery eyes.「鼻は詰まるし、痒くて、涙目にはなるし」でしょうか。
