《今日のFUP：1091》 正々堂々 ─ せいせいどうどう
「何か文句があるなら、正々堂々と面と向かって言うべきだ」 ─ If you’ve got a complaint, you ought to state it face to face, fair and square.
complaint「文句、不満」。state ～ face to faceで「～を面と向かって述べる」という意味に。fair and squareが「正々堂々と」に当たる言い回しです。fair「公正な」とsquare「公平な」は形容詞ですが、ここでは副詞の働きをしています。
(例)「人前ではもっと堂々としなくてはだめだよ」─ You need to be more stately in front of people.
・stately「堂々とした、威厳のある」。
