どこかでお会いしましたか?
(1) How's business?
→景気はどう?
◎How'sはHow isの短縮形。How's business?は「儲かってますか?」の意味にもなります。
(2) How's the world treating you these days?
→最近、調子のほうはどうなの?
◎treat「扱う」。この言い回しは「景気はどう?」の意味にも使えます。
(3) I'm sorry I haven't been in touch for so long.
→ご無沙汰しております。
◎I'm sorryとI haven't been in touch for so long.「とても長い間連絡を取っていない」を組み合わせて「ご無沙汰しております」を表現。(例)Long time no see. What's it been, three years?「久しぶり。どれくらいになる、3年?」。What'sはWhat hasの短縮形。
(4) Do I know you from somewhere?
→どこかでお会いしましたか?
◎know a person from somewhereは「(その人に)どこかで会って知っている」の意味。(例)Have we met somewhere before?「以前、どこかでお会いしましたか?」。
(5) You two haven't met before, have you?
→2人は前に会ったことないですよね。
◎You two「あなたたち2人」。Do you two know each other?とも言えます。
(6) Does your visit have anything to do with business?
→今回いらしたのは何か仕事と関係があるのですか?
◎visit「訪問(名詞)」、have something to do with ~「~と関係がある」。(例)That problem has nothing to do with me.「その問題は私には関係がない」。
(7) Feel free to have a look around if you like.
→よろしければご自由にご覧になってください。
◎feel free to ~「自由に~してください」、have a look around「見て回る」、if you like「よろしければ」。ポイントはこの3つです。
(8) I'm sure you'll like it.
→きっと気に入っていただけると思いますよ。
◎I'm sure ~「きっと~」。(例)I'm sure things will work out.「きっと何とかなる」。you'llはyou willの短縮形。
(9) We're open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
→1日24時間、年中無休です。
◎open「営業を行っている」。(例)We're open weekdays and closed weekends.「ウィークデイは営業し、ウィークエンドは営業しません」。
(10) Buy two and get the third one for free.
→2つ買えば、1つおまけします。
◎「1つおまけします」をget the third one for free「3つ目をただでもらえる」で表現。(例)Could you give me a discount?「おまけしてもらえますか?」。
(11) Please pay in advance.
→前金でお願いします。
◎pay「支払う」、in advance「前もって」。(例)You need to apply in advance.「前もって申し込む必要があります」。
(12) Please give my best regards to Mr. Brown.
→どうぞブラウンさんによろしくお伝えください。
◎give my best regards to ~が「~によろしく伝える」に当たる言い回しです。(例)Say hi to him.「彼によろしく」。
(13) I'd like you to meet some business contacts.
→取り引き相手に会ってほしいのですが。
◎business contacts「取り引き相手」。(例)He has wide contacts.「彼は顔が広い」。
(14) Thank you so much for sparing your valuable time yesterday.
→昨日はお忙しいところお時間をいただきましてありがとうございました。
◎spare one's valuable time「貴重な時間を割く」。(例)Would you spare me a minute?「少し時間をいただけますか?」。
(15) I'll have to talk with him about this matter one-on-one.
→この件に関して彼と一対一で話さないといけない。
◎「一対一で」はone-on-oneと言います。(例)I want to talk to you personally.「個人的に話したいのですが」。
(16) He's the last person I expected to see here.
→彼にここで会うとは思いもしなかった。
◎the last person (that) I expected to seeとは「会うと期待していた最後の人」、つまり「会うとは思っていなかった人」。(例)Rain is the last problem (that) I expected today.「まさか今日雨が降るとは」。
(17) Thanks for coming all the way to pick me up.
→わざわざ車で迎えに来ていただいてありがとうございます。
◎come all the way to ~「わざわざ~をしに来る」。(例)He came all the way from London to see her.「彼は彼女に会いにわざわざロンドンからやって来た」。
(18) They canceled the meeting at the last moment again.
→あの人たちまた打ち合わせをドタキャンした。
◎「~をドタキャンする」をcancel ~ at the last moment「~を最後の瞬間にキャンセルする」で表現。
(19) That client needs a lot of looking after.
→あのクライアントは手が掛かる。
◎need a lot of looking afterは「いろいろと世話を焼かなくてはいけない」の意味。
(20) That customer does nothing but complain.
→あの客はクレームばかりつけてくる。
◎do nothing but ~「~ばかりする」。(例)He did nothing but play soccer in his school days.「彼は学生時代サッカーばかりしていた」。
(21) I'll be a few minutes late for our appointment today.
→本日のアポイントに少し遅れそうです。
◎「アポイント」はappointmentと言わなければ通じません。(例)Our appointment is for three, right?「約束は3時ですよね?」。
(22) Would it be all right to meet with you in the lobby?
→ロビーでの待ち合わせでよろしいでしょうか?
◎「~してもよろしいですか」をWould it be all right to ~で表現。meet with a person「約束して人に会う」。
(23) I hope you'll go easy on me on the golf course today.
→今日のゴルフはお手柔らかにお願いしますよ。
◎「お手柔らかに」をgo easy on ~「~に優しくする、~に手加減する」で表現。(例)My doctor told me to go easy on the salt.「塩は控えめにと医者に言われた」。
(24) Will you give me a rain check?
→またの機会にしていただけますか?
◎rain check「またの機会、後日の約束」。(例)Can I have a rain check for our date tonight?「今夜のデートを別の日にしてもらえる?」。
(25) I've learned a lot from working with you.
→あなたと一緒に仕事をしてとても勉強になりました。
◎I've learned a lot from talking with you.と言えば、「あなたとお話してとても勉強になりました」の意味。
(26) I look forward to working together again.
→また一緒に仕事をするのを楽しみにしています。
◎look forward toの後に動詞を続ける場合には~ing形(動名詞)にします。(例)I look forward to meeting you face-to-face.「直接お会いするのを楽しみにしています」。
(27) He knows a lot of people.
→彼は顔が広い。
◎「顔が広い」をknow a lot of people「たくさん人を知っている」で表現。wide faceとは言いません。(例)He has very wide contacts in this industry.「彼はこの業界でとても顔が広い」。(13)参照。
(28) He knows how to get the job done.
→彼は仕事ができる。
◎「仕事ができる」とはknow how to get the job done「仕事の片付け方を知っている」ということですね。He's very efficient in his work.とも言えます。
(29) This work is harder than I thought.
→この仕事は思ったよりきつい。
◎「思ったよりきつい」をharder than I thoughtで表現。thoughtの代わりにexpectedも使えます。(例)This wallet is more expensive than I thought.「この財布、思ったより高いね」。
(30) This is a hard and thankless job.
→これはきつくて報われない仕事だ。
◎「報われない」をthankless「感謝されない」で表現。
