語彙トレ(1)-(10)

 

意味を確認して音読しましょう。

 

(1)morning person 「朝型の人」

I'm not much of a morning person.
→私、あまり朝に強くないのよ。

 

◎「朝型の人」はa morning person、「夜型の人」はa night personと言います。Column 1参照。not much of ~「あまり~でない」。

 

(2)impatience 「いらいら、短気」

You have impatience written all over your face.
→いらいらしてるって顔中に書いてあるよ。

 

◎形容詞はimpatientですね。have ~ written all over one's face「~と顔中に書いてある」。

 

(3)senior 「高齢者、年配者」

Do you offer a discount for seniors?
→高齢者への割引はありますか?

 

◎senior citizensとも言います。offer「提供する」。

 

(4)turmoil 「混乱、騒動」

Heavy snowfall threw the train schedule into turmoil.
→大雪のために電車のダイヤが混乱した。

 

◎snowfall「降雪」。throw ~ into turmoil「~を混乱に陥れる」。turmoilの代わりにconfusion「混乱」も使えます。

 

(5)blow 「殴打、一撃」

Whoever gets in the first blow wins.
→先手必勝。

 

◎「最初に一撃を加えた者が(誰であろうと)勝つ」が文字通りの意味。Whoever strikes first wins.やHit first if you want to win.でも同じような意味を表せます。

 

(6)objection 「反対、異論」

Objections to this policy are going to surface anytime soon.
→すぐにでもこの政策に対する異論が表面化するだろう。

 

◎動詞はobj*ectです。(*印はアクセントの位置)(例)Who objects?「反対の人?」。*objectは名詞で「物体、目的、目的語」などの意味。surface「表面(名詞)」は「表面化する」という意味の動詞としても使えます。

 

(7)risk 「危険」

He is the type who tries to avoid any kind of risk.
→彼は石橋を叩いて渡るタイプよね。

 

◎「石橋を叩いて渡る」をtries to avoid any kind of risk「どのような危険も避けようとする」で表現。the type who ~「~のタイプである」。(例)She's the type who gets nervous in front of people.「彼女はあがり症なの」。

 

(8)noise 「騒音」

Everybody got drunk and made a lot of noise last night.
→昨夜は酔って、みんなで大騒ぎした。

 

◎make a lot of noise「大騒ぎする」。形容詞はnoisyです。(例)Those guys are too noisy.「あいつらうるさ過ぎる」。

 

(9)issue 「問題」

Tell me about your thinking on this issue.
→この問題についてあなたの考えを教えて。

 

◎「それって微妙な問題よね」はThat's a sensitive issue.と言います。thinking「考え、意見」。(例)That sounds like wishful thinking.「それは考えが甘いわね(希望的観測)」。

 

(10)mileage 「燃費、走行距離」

I thought this car would get better mileage.
→この車はもっと燃費がいいと思ってた。

 

◎This car doesn't get the mileage that I thought it would.「この車は思ったほど燃費がよくないね」とも言えます。gas-guzzler「ガソリンを食う(燃費の悪い)大型車」も覚えておきましょう。
