英文法の急所（文法82回）
知っておくべき英文法のポイント（急所）を確認しましょう。今回のポイントは、英語らしい表現を身につける(15)「頻繁に用いられる依頼表現」です。1.～4.のモノローグを赤字に注意して読んでください。
1. Do you mind giving me a hand?
This table is hard to lift.
It has an awkward shape.
手伝ってくれませんか？
このテーブルを持ち上げるのが大変なんです。
変な形をしているので。
2. Could I ask you a favor?
I'm all out of leads for my mechanical pencil.
Would you give me some of yours?
頼みがあるんだけど。
シャーペンの芯がなくなっちゃったんだ。
何本かもらえる？
3. Excuse me. I'd appreciate it if you'd put out your cigarette.
The smoke really bothers me.
And this is a no-smoking section.
すません。たばこを消していただけるとありがたいのですが。

4. Would it be asking too much to have you make me a cup of coffee?
I'm so sleepy.

【解説】
1.「～してくれませんか？」と声をかける時によく使われるのがDo / Would you mind ～ingです。ちなみに、「いいですよ」と答える場合には、No, not all. / No. I don't (wouldn't).と言います。give a person a hand「手伝う、手を貸す」、awkward「不格好な」。
2. Could I ask you a favor?「お願いがあるのですが」は相手に何かを頼む時の決まり文句。lead「芯」、mechanical pencil「シャープペンシル」。
3. I would appreciate it if ～で「～していただけるとありがたい」の意味になります。bother「悩ませる」。
4. Would it be asking too much to ～「～するのは無理な注文でしょうか」を使って丁寧に頼んでいます。the coffeeの後にthat / which（関係代名詞）が略されています。

5. Do you mind if ～と聞かれた場合、「はい」と返事をする場合にはNo.と答えます。
6. Do me a favor and ～は「お願い、～して」の意味。day care「託児所」。
7. I'd appreciate if if you could ～「～してくれるとありがたい」と言って相手に頼んでいます。
8. ask too muchの使い方がポイント。「無理なのは（要求し過ぎているのは）わかっている」はI know it's asking too much.で表現します。
