【和訳】
演劇の結末には驚いたね。
主人公が死んだ時は、ショックだったな。
悲しくて、涙が出たよ。

【解説】
(1) 「驚くような終わり方、どんでん返し」はa surprise endingと言います。main character「主人公、主役」。sadの後にthatが略されています。

《例文》
1.This movie has an unsatisfying ending.
→この映画の終わり方には不満が残る。
2. How do you like the ending of this novel?
→この小説の結末はどう？
3. It's hard to sympathize with the main character of that movie.
→あの映画の主役には共感できない。
4. He was so shocked by the news that he couldn't say anything.
→彼はその知らせにとても驚き、何も言えなかった。
5. I was so busy that I had no idea what was going on.
→忙しすぎて何がなんだかわからない状態でした。

【音読アドバイス】
《ポイント：母音[ai]》buy, fine, tonight, why
(1) had aは「ハダ」。surpriseは少し伸ばすように「サプラーィズ」と発音します。
(2) shockedとdiedを強調。
(3) 最後の文は悲しげに言いましょう。
