◇絶対振られると思ってたのに◇
次の文を英訳すると？

1. クラスで気になってた女の子がいてさ。
2. 昨日、告白したんだ。
3. そうしたら、付き合ってみてもいいって。
4. 絶対振られると思ってたのに。
5. 言ってみるもんだね。

【Step 1】
日本語の意味に合わせて英訳してみましょう。

1. I was interested in a girl in my class.
2. Yesterday, I told her about it.
3. Then, she said she could become my girlfriend.
4. I had been sure that she would reject me.
5. It is good to say things like that.

より英語らしく表現する（英語に磨きをかける）とどうなるか。カッコに入る語を考えてみてください。

【解説】
1.「気になる」をcatch one's eye「目を引く」で表現しています。ここではThere was this girl in my class I liked. / I wanted to get to know this girl in my class.とも言えます。
2. put one's cards on the table「（トランプで）手の内を見せる、事実を明かす」とtell her everythingを組み合わせて「告白する」を表現している点に注目。put one's cards ～の代わりにI came out with it 「口に出した」を使ってもいいでしょう。
3. not mind ～ingで「～してもいい（嫌ではない）」の意味になります。「付き合う」は、get togetherの他に、go out with meやstart seeing each otherなどの言い方があります。
4.「絶対～だと思っていた」をhad been convinced ～「～だと（ずっと）確信していた」で表しています。brush offは「すげなく断る、払いのける」という意味。簡単にI was sure she'd say no.と言ってもいいでしょう。
5. go ahead and say ～「思い切って～と言ってみる」。Going ～ and saying ～（動名詞）が主語。andがありますが、これは一つの行為ですからbe動詞はwasにします。この場面では、turn out「（結果として ）～になる」を用いて、It turns out that just telling her was the right thing to do.のようにも言えます。
