◇祖父の写真を見て感想を言う◇
This is a picture of my grandfather.
He was about 20 years old.
Wasn't he a handsome young man?

【和訳】
これ祖父の写真。
20歳くらいの時だな。
ハンサムな若者だったんじゃない？

【解説】
a picture of ～「～の写真」、about ～ years old「～くらいの年齢」。「祖父」はgrandfather、「祖母」はgrandmotherですね。great-grandfather, great-grandmother「曾祖父、曾祖母」も一緒に覚えておきましょう。Wasn't he ～?はDon't you think he was ～?「～だったと思わない？」のように言い換えられます。

《例文》
1. Let's get a picture of us with the sea in the background.
→海を背景に写真を撮ろうよ。
2. I was so overcome by the sight that I forgot to take a picture of it.
→思わず風景に見入ってしまい、写真を撮るのを忘れた。
3. The suspect is a male about 175 cm tall and about 25 years old.
→容疑者は男性で、身長は約175センチ、年齢は30歳くらい。
4. Wasn't it about three months ago?
→それって3ヶ月くらい前じゃなかった？
5. Don't you think this dish is too salty?
→この料理、しょっぱすぎるんじゃない？

【音読アドバイス】
《ポイント：母音 [ə]》afraid - again - seven - the
(1) This, picture, grandfatherを強める。a[ə]とof[əv]は軽く発音。
(2) wasとaboutの[ə]の発音はあまり意識する必要はありません。20 years oldははっきりと。
(3) Wasn't, handsome, young, manを強め、manでイントネーションを上げます。
