英文法の急所（文法74回）
知っておくべき英文法のポイント（急所）を確認しましょう。今回のポイントは、英語らしい表現を身につける(7)です（timeの四つの使い方）。1.～4.のモノローグを赤字に注意して読んでください。
1. You're in a hurry, aren't you?
Go ahead and use the copy machine.
I have a lot of time.
急いでるんでしょう。
どうぞ先にコピー機を使ってください。
僕は時間がありますから。
2. Have a nice time in Mexico.
I wish I could go with you.
You'll send a postcard, I hope.
メキシコで楽しんで来てね。
一緒に行ければいいんだけどな。
絵はがき送ってよね。
3. You should exercise more.
Jog or swim three times a week.
I know you'll feel much better.
もっと運動したほうがいいよ。
ジョギングとか水泳を週に3度。
ずっと気分がよくなるから。
4. Hiring new employees isn't easy.
You have to reject a lot of good people.
There are three times as many applicants as we need.
新しい社員を雇うのは簡単ではない。
いい人をたくさん落とさなくてはならないから。
必要な人員の3倍もの応募者がいるからね。

【解説】
1. この場合のtime「時間」は不可算名詞。したがって、manyではなくa lot ofを使っています。Go ahead and do ～で「さあ～してください」の意味。
2. have a nice timeで「楽しい時を過ごす」。このtimeは一定の期間を表しています。niceの他にgood, great, wonderfulなどが使えます。I hopeを付け足して「～してね（期待している）」と言っています。
3. このtimeは「～回、～度」を表します。three times a weekで「週3回」の意味。
4. three times as many ～ as ...で「...より3倍の～」の意味になります。timesは掛け算にも使えます。（例）Five times eight is 40.「5掛ける8は40」。
