ステップアップ英作文で英語に磨きをかけましょう。

◇前から読みたいと思ってたんだ◇
次の文を英訳すると？

1. その本、終わったら貸してくれない？
2. 前から読みたいと思ってたんだ。
3. とはいっても、自分で買うほどじゃないんだよね ...
4. でもベストセラーはおさえておきたいし。
5. 次作が出たら、僕が買って回すからさ。

【Step 1】
日本語の意味に合わせて英訳してみましょう。

1. May I borrow that book when you finish?
2. I wanted to read it from a long time ago.
3. But that doesn't mean I want to buy it.
4. I want to read it because it is a bestseller.
5. I will buy the next one and lend it to you.

より英語らしく表現する（英語に磨きをかける）とどうなるか。カッコに入る語を考えてみてください。

【解説】
1. have first dibs onの使い方に注目。ここでは「利用できるようになったら最初に読む権利を持つ（have the right to borrow or have something as soon as it's available）」の意味になります。「終わる」はbe done with itでも表現できます。
2.「ずっと～したいと思っている」をhave been wanting to ～（現在完了進行形）で表しています。wantingの代わりに、meaning to ～「～するつもり」、 dying to ～「～したくてたまらない」も使えます。
3. 省略されている語句を補うと次のようになります。Maybe (I do) not (want to read it badly) enough to buy a copy myself, but ～.これで「欲しいからといって、買うほどではないんだ。でも～」と言っているのです。butの後にyou know what I mean「言おうとしていることはわかるだろ」を付け足してもいいでしょう。
4.「おさえておく」をtrying to read ～「読もうとしている」で言い換えています。on the bestseller listの前置詞onの使い方に注意。この場面では、I love getting my hands on a bestseller.も使えますね。get my hands on ～「～に手を付ける」の意味。
5.「次作」はthe one that comes out next「次に出版される本」でいいでしょう。もし、それが続き物ならば、the sequel「続編」を使って、I'll pass the sequel on to you first when I buy it.のように言います。

今日のワンポイント
「ずっと～したいと思っている」はhave been wanting to ～で表現します。次の例文を見てください。

I've been wanting to go to New York.
→ニューヨークに行ってみたいとずっと思っててね。
I've been wanting to give the Italian place a try.
→そのイタリア料理の店に試しに行ってみたいとずっと思ってるの。
She's been wanting to learn to speak English like a native.
→彼女はネイティブのように英語が話せるようになりたいとずっと思っている。
