今回のポイントは副詞としてのthisとthatの使い方。
まず、例文1.～3.を見てください。
1. I’ve never handled a job this big before.
以前にこれほど大きな仕事を扱ったことがない。
2. It’s not that bad.
そんなに悪くはない。
3. I didn’t think she’d like it that much.
彼女がそんなに気に入るとは思わなかった。
this, that, thatはそれぞれbig, bad, muchを修飾する副詞として使われています。
会話の例を挙げてみましょう。
A: My son is growing very quickly.
B: How big is he now?
A: He’s about this tall.
（和訳は省略。）
this tallと言って、手を使い息子の背の高さを相手に伝えています。
念のため会話文をもう一つ。
A: I walked all the way home from the movie theater last night.
B: How far is the walk?
A: You know the distance from here to the shopping mall? It’s about that far.
（distance「距離」。和訳は省略。）
It’s about that far.で「だいたいそれくらいの距離」の意味。about that farとはIt’s about the same distance as from here to the the shopping mall.ということですね。
