「言い換え色々８」。色々な言い換え問題にトライしてみましょう。早速、実例をチェック！
1. There were some famous people at the party.
そのパーティーには有名人が何人か来ていた。
⇨ Some celebrities ( s ) up at the party.
2. I just got another bizarre picture in my e-mail.
変な画像をメールで送ってきたぞ。
⇨ Somebody just ( e ) me another weird picture.
《解説》
1. ～ showed up「～が姿を見せた」→「来ていた」。some famous peopleをcelebrities「有名人、著名人」と言い換えている点にも注目。(例) This is rare. It looks like everybody showed up today.「珍しく今日は全員参加のようだね」。
2. e-mailは動詞としても使えます。Somebody just e-mailed me ～「誰かが～をメールで送ってきた」。bizarre「奇妙な」、weird「風変わりな」。(例) Just e-mail me at that address.「そのアドレスにメール送ってくれればいいから」。

《解答・解説》
3. suffer from diarrhea of the mouthの文字通りの意味は「口が下痢になっている」。これで「おしゃべり」の意味に。(例) I have a touch of diarrhea.「少し下痢気味なんだ」。
4. ～ spoiled the fireworks「～が花火を台無しにした」→ The fireworks were ruined by ～「～によって花火が台無し (だめ) にされた」。受動態になっている点に注目。(例) The performance was ruined by the terrible acoustics.「音響効果がひどかったので、演奏が台無しだった」。
5. soothe one’s heart「心を落ち着かせる (安らぐ)」→ put ～ at ease「～を落ち着かせる、ほっとさせる」。(例) Looking at landscapes puts me at ease.「風景画を見ていると心がなごむ」。
