《今日のFUP：1185》 器用貧乏 ─ きようびんぼう
「息子が器用貧乏になるのではないかと心配している」─ I worry that my son will turn out to be a jack of all trades and master of none.
turn out to ～「(結局) ～になる」。a jack-of-all-trades「何でも屋」とmaster of none「これだという物が何もない人 (精通している物がない)」を組み合わせて「器用貧乏」を表現しています。次の言い回しも覚えておきましょう。He’s quite a handyman.「彼はとても器用だ」、He used to be versatile at sports.「彼はかつてスポーツ万能だった」。
（例）「僕は不器用だから。細かい手作業はできないよ」─ I’m a klutz. I could never do fine work with my hands.
・klutz「不器用な人」。
前回の復習
「彼の嘘のうまさは、拍手喝采ものだ」─ He’s so good at lying that he deserves a hearty round of applause.
「盛んな拍手に値する」─ deserve a hearty round of applause
「力のこもった」─ hearty
「(拍手など) ひとしきり、しばらくの間」─ round
「拍手 (喝采)」─ applause
「彼がエルビスの物真似をしたら、そこにいる人たちみんなが大喝采した」─ He did an Elvis impersonation, and that brought the house down.
「満場をどっと笑わせる」─ bring down the house
「ジョーンズ教授に大きな拍手をお送りください」─ Let’s hear a big round of applause for Prof. Jones.
Extra Bit：「しばらく笑った後で、聴衆は拍手をし始めた」─ After laughing for a while, the audience began clapping.
