《今日のFUP：1038》 虎視眈々 ─ こしたんたん
「彼らはチャンスの到来を虎視眈々と待ち構えていた」 ─ They were biding their time, like a tiger, waiting for a chance to pounce.
「虎視眈々」は英語でもlike a lion「虎のように」を使って表現します。bide one’s timeは「チャンスを待つ」、pounceは「飛びかかる」という意味。lie in wait「待ち伏せする」を使って、次のようにも言えます。They were lying in wait for just the right chance.
(例)「この機会を逃したら、きっと後悔する」─ I’m sure you’ll be sorry if you miss this chance.
・miss「見逃す」。

「頼むよ、単刀直入に言ってくれ。あまり時間がないんだ」─ Come on, cut to the chase. I don’t have all day.
「要点を言う (単刀直入に言う)」─ cut to the chase
「遠慮せずに単刀直入に言って」─ Don’t be afraid to be blunt.
「単刀直入に言います」─ I’ll get right to the point.
「遠回しな言い方をしないで、はっきり言って」─ Stop beating around the bush and tell me straight.
「もったいぶった話し方をしなくてもいいじゃないか」─ I don’t want you to talk in a roundabout way.
Extra Bit：「いくつか単刀直入に質問させてください」─ Let's start with some direct questions.
