(201) catch 「良き結婚相手」

 

My mother thinks he's quite a catch.
→母は彼のことを結婚相手としては申し分ないと思っている。

 

◎ catchには「良き結婚相手」の他に「策略、わな」の意味もあります。（例）What's the catch?「何を企んでるの？」、The rent of this apartment is so cheap that there must be a catch.「このアパートの家賃はとても安いから、裏があるに違いない」。quite a ～「大した～、並はずれた～」。

 

(202) decisiveness 「決断力」

 

What will it take to inspire decisiveness in him?
→彼に決断力を持たせるには何が必要だろう？

 

◎ 形容詞decisive「決断力のある」＋nessで名詞に。「優柔不断、煮え切らないこと」はindecisivenessと言います。（例）She was getting sick and tired of his indecisiveness.「彼女は彼の優柔不断さにうんざりしていた」。

 

(203) outfit 「服装一式」

 

Dress your age. You look like a teenage girl in that outfit.
→年相応の服装をしなさいよ。その服装だと十代の女の子みたいだわ。

 

◎ Dressの代わりにActを使うと「年相応の行動をしなさい」の意味になります。look like ～「～のように見える」。outfitを使った例文をもう一つ。That outfit he has on reflects his personality.「あの格好、彼らしいわね（個性が表れている）」。

 

(204) sprain 「捻挫」

 

I hope your sprain gets better soon.
→捻挫が早く良くなるといいよね。

 

◎ sprainは動詞としても使えます。（例）I sprained my lower back when I tried to lift something heavy.「重い物を持ち上げようとして、ぎっくり腰になった」。

 

(205) sticky 「付箋」

 

I put yellow stickies on the pages I want you to read.
→あなたに読んでほしいページに黄色い付箋をつけておいたわ。

 

◎「試験本番になると」をwhen it comes to taking an actual test「実際の試験を受けるとなると」で表現しています。「本番」の例文をもう一つ。I wish I were good at handling actual interviews.「本番の面接がうまくできればいいのに」。ここで英作文。「運転免許は持ってるけど、ペーパードライバーなの」を英語で言うと……I have a driver's license, but no actual experience driving.

 

(206) mortgage 「住宅ローン、抵当」

 

I bought my house on a 35-year mortgage.
→35年の住宅ローンで家を買った。

 

◎ mortgageの発音は「モーギッジ」。[t]は発音しません。形容詞35-yearに複数形のsは不要です。住宅ローンの期間を聞く場合には、例えば、What's the term of your mortgage -- how many years?「ローンの期間はどれくらい -- 何年？」のように言います。次の言い回しも覚えておきましょう。take out a 20-year mortgage「20年のローンを組む」。

 

(207) wimp 「弱虫」

 

Don't act like that. People will think you're a wimp.
→そんな振る舞い方はよしなさい。弱虫だと思われるわよ。

 

◎ 例文をもう一つ。What a yellow-bellied wimp!「なんて臆病で弱虫なんだ！」。wimpは「怖じ気づく」の意味の動詞としても使えます。（例）Don't wimp out!「怖じ気づかないで！」。

 

(208) nerd 「おたく、マニア」

 

I admit it. I'm an anime nerd.
→先週彼は落ち込んでいたが、立ち直った。

 

◎ nerdには「ださい奴」という意味も含まれるようです。（例）camera nerd「カメラおたく」、computer nerd「コンピューターおたく」、train nerd「鉄道おたく」。animeとは特に日本のアニメーションのことを言います。geekでも「おたく」を表現できます。

 

(209) grunt work 「単調でつらい仕事」

 

I don't mind doing grunt work as long as I get paid.
→給料がもらえるなら、単調でつらい仕事をするのはかまわない。

 

◎ 例文をもう一つ。How come we have to do all the grunt work for him?「どうして私たちが彼のために単調でつらい仕事をしなくちゃいけないの？」。menial task「単調でつまらない仕事」も覚えておきましょう。as long as ～「～でありさえすれば」。

 

(210) respect 「敬意、尊敬」

 

Show respect when you talk to your elders.
→目上の人たちに話す時には敬意を払いなさい。

 

◎ respectは動詞としても使えます。（例）I think you should respect other people's values.「他の人たちの価値観を尊重すべきだと思う」。respectful「敬意を表する」、respectfully「丁寧に」、respectable「まともな」、 respectability「体面、りっぱな態度」も一緒に覚えておきましょう。
