Point 29：諦める英語

「諦める」と言って、すぐに思い浮かぶ表現。それはgive upですね。

Don't give up halfway!
→途中で諦めるな！
You give up too easily.
→相変わらず諦めが早いな。
Never give up -- that's my motto.
→決して諦めない -- それが僕のモットー。
If you give up now, what good will it do?
→今諦めて、何になる？

give＋目的語＋upとgive up on ～のパターン。

Why don't you just give it up?
→もう諦めたら？
This is a waste of time. Let's give this one up.
→時間の無駄だよ。今回は諦めよう。
I gave up on trying to lose weight.
→痩せるのは諦めたよ。
It's too early to give up on that plan.
→その計画を諦めるのは時期尚早だ。




「諦める」に関連した次の言い回しも覚えておきましょう。

Don't be a quitter.
→すぐに諦めるなよ。
He doesn't know when to quit.
→彼は諦めが悪い。
I can't throw in the towel now!
→ここで諦めてたまるか！
Sometimes giving in is the best thing.
→時には諦め（降参すること）も肝心だよ。
Don't just throw your hands up and quit.
→諦めてやめるのはよせ。
