木曜日は「英文法」の日。Practice before theory.「理屈より実践」。さまざな例文を参考にして、使える英文法を身につけましょう。今回も基本動詞Stayを取り上げます。

◆Stay使いこなす！ (2)◆
日常会話の中でよく用いられる例文を五つ挙げてみます。

【リピーティング】
英文11～15をリピートしましょう。

11. Our kids stay up late on Friday nights.
→子供たちは金曜日の夜は夜更かしする。
12. I stayed on my diet for a month, then had a relapse.
→一ヶ月ダイエットしてたんだけど、元に戻っちゃったよ。
13. This music stays with you afterward.
→この音楽は耳に残る。
14. They stayed together in the end.
→結局、彼らは元の鞘に収まった。
15. Stay away from my girlfriend.
→僕の彼女にちょっかい出さないでくれ。




▽解説・穴埋め

【解説】
11. stay up late「夜更かしをする（夜遅くまで起きている）」。（例）I had no trouble staying up all night when I was young.「若い頃は徹夜しても、何ともなかったけどな」。
12.「ダイエットを続ける」はstay on a dietとonを使います。「ダイエットをする」はgo on a dietと言います。（例）You shouldn't go on a drastic diet.「過激なダイエットはすべきではない」。relapse「逆戻り」。
13. stay with you「あなたと一緒にいる」とafterward「後に」を組み合わせて「耳に残る」を表現。（例）His words stay in your head.「彼の言葉が頭から離れない」。
14. stay together「一緒にいる、別れない」で「元の鞘に収まる」の意味に。（例）Those two seem to stay together all the time.「あの二人はいつも一緒にいるようだね」。
15. stay away from ～「～に近づかない、離れている」で「ちょっかいを出さない」を表現。（例）I want you to stay away from trouble.「問題を起こさないでほしい」。

日本語の意味なるようにカッコに適切な語を入れてください。

【解説】
16. stay up late to ～「～するために夜更かしする」。（例）In order to make my deadline I had to stay up all night for three nights.「締め切りに間に合わせるために、三日徹夜した」。finish「仕上げる」。
17. stay on this road「この道にいる」で「道なりに進む」という意味に。（例）His positive attitude helps him stay on top.「前向きな姿勢のお陰で彼はトップの座を維持していられる」。until you see ～「～が見えるまで」。
18. stay with you「一緒にいる」で「付き合う」、to the bitter end「最後の最後まで」で「とことん」を表現しています。（例）We fought it out to the bitter end.「僕たちは最後の最後まで戦い抜いた」。
19. stayの代わりにstickも使えます。Let's stand by each other through thick and thin.でも同じような意味になります。through thick and thin「良い時も悪い時も」。no matter what ～「何が～しても」。（例）Stay with it no matter what. That's important!「何事も続けることが大切だ！」。
20. stay away from disposable goodsの文字通りの意味は「使い捨ての製品から離れている」。（例）Stay away from impulse-buying today.「今日は衝動買をしないようにしないと」。
