第179回

木曜日は「英文法」の日。Practice before theory.「理屈より実践」。さまざな例文を参考にして、使える英文法を身につけましょう。今回は基本動詞Stayを取り上げます。

◆Stay使いこなす！ (1)◆
日常会話の中でよく用いられる例文を五つ挙げてみます。

【リピーティング】
英文1～5をリピートしましょう。

1. We decided to stay at home instead of going out.
→出かけずに家にいることにした。
2. He wanted to stay longer.
→彼はもっと長くいたかった。
3. Stay calm, and do your best.
→落ち着いて、最善を尽くしなさい。
4. Sometimes I stay in bed almost until lunch time.
→お昼頃まで寝ていることが時々ある。
5. I'm too old to be staying out dancing all night.
→歳だから一晩中踊っていられないよ。




▽解説・穴埋め

【解説】
1. stay at home「家にいる」。atを省略してstay homeとも言います。（例）It's best to stay home during the Golden Week holiday.「ゴールデンウィーク中は家にいるのが一番だよ」。instead of ～ing「～する代わりに」。
2. stay long「長くいる（滞在する）」。stay longerで「もっと長くいる」。（例）Feel free to stay as long as you like.「好きなだけいてかまいませんよ」。
3. stay calm「落ち着く（落ち着いた状態でいる）」。次の言い回しも覚えておきましょう。（例）Don't get flustered. Stay cool, calm and collected.「慌てることはない。あくまで冷静に」。
4. stay in bed「寝ている（ベッドの中にいる）」。bedの前にtheは不要。（例）It's important to stay in touch with old friends.「昔からの友達と連絡を取り続けるのは大切だよね」。touchの前にtheを付ける必要はありません。
5. stay out「外にいる」。stay out dancing all night「（家に帰らずに）一晩中踊っている」。（例） If you stay out drinking every night, your wife is going to leave you.「毎晩飲み歩いてばかりいたら、奥さんに愛想尽かされるぞ」。

【穴埋め】 日本語の意味なるようにカッコに適切な語を入れてください。

6. He went to America, intending to stay (　　　) for good.
→彼は骨を埋めるつもりでアメリカに渡った。
7. I've probably stayed longer (　　　) I should.
→随分長居をしてしまいました。
8. I envy the way he's able to stay so (　　　).
→彼はいつ見ても若々しいから、うらやましいよ。
9. It's not easy to stay in (　　　).
→健康を維持するのは簡単ではない。
10. It's not like him to stay out (　　　) without calling.
→電話もせずに夜遅くまで帰ってこないのは彼らしくない。

【解説】
6. stay there for good「永久にそこ（アメリカ）にいる」で「骨を埋める」を表現。stay hereを使った例文を挙げておきましょう。As long as we stay here, we're never going to get anywhere.「こんな所にいては、いつまでたっても埒があかない」。
7. I've probably stayed longer than I should.「そうすべきよりも多分長くいた」で「随分長居をしてしまいました」を表現。ちなみに、「このへんで失礼します」はI'll be going now.と言います。
8. stay young「若いままでいる」。stay＋形容詞に注目。（例）To stay healthy, I'm careful about how much sugar I eat.「健康維持のため、砂糖を摂りすぎないよう心がけています」。
9. stay in shape「健康を維持する、体型を保つ」。（例）Walking is a good way to stay in shape.「健康を維持するにはウォーキングがいい」。
10. stay out late「夜遅くまで出歩く（帰ってこない）」。（例）Since you seem to have a cold coming on, you'd better not stay out late.「風邪を引きかけてるんだから、夜遅くまで出歩かない方がいい」。

英文6～10をリピートしましょう。

→彼が何を言おうが、冷静に。

→他人の問題に首を突っ込まないでくれ。
How do you stay awake when you're studying?
→勉強している時、どうやって起きているの？
How long will this fish stay fresh in the refrigerator?
→この魚は冷蔵庫でどのくらい持つだろうか？

→雪が降り続くんだったら、家にいるよ。
