木曜日は「英文法」の日。Practice before theory.「理屈より実践」。さまざな例文を参考にして、使える英文法を身につけましょう。今回も基本動詞Thinkを取り上げます。

◆Think使いこなす！ (2)◆
日常会話の中でよく用いられる例文を五つ挙げてみます。

【リピーティング】
英文11～15をリピートしましょう。

11. I couldn't think of what to say.
→何と言ったらいいか思いつかなかったんだ。
12. I don't think of myself as being superstitious.
→自分自身のことを迷信家だとは思わない。
13. He thinks nothing of being late for appointments.
→約束の時間に遅れることを彼は何とも思っていない。
14. I want you to think it over again.
→もう一度よく考えてほしい。
15. I hope he'll think twice about that issue.
→その問題について彼がよく考えてくれたらいいのだが。

【解説】
11. think of ～「～を思いつく」。（例）I don't know why I didn't think of it.「どうしてそれを思いつかなかったのかな」。
12. think of ～ as ...で「～を...とみなす、考える」という意味に。（例）I think of him as a contrarian.「彼はあまのじゃくだと思う」。
13. think nothing of ～が「何とも思わない」に当たる言い回しです。（例）Now people think nothing of flying halfway around the world.「今では飛行機で世界を半周することなど何とも思っていない」。
14. think over「よく考える」。（例）It's against the rule. You should think it over.「それは規則違反だから。よく考えるべきだ」。
15.「よく考える」はthink twice「二度考える」でも表現できます。（例）He told me to think twice about quitting the job.「仕事を辞めることについてよく考えるように彼に言われた」。

16. Can you think of a single thing ～の文字通りの意味は「～が一つでも思いつくかい？」。（例）I can't think of anything good to say.「何かいいことを言いたいんだけど（思いつかない）」。
17. learning opportunity「学習する機会」。（例）Think of it as a chance to learn English.「英語を学ぶチャンスだと思えばいい」。
18.「平気で～する」をthink nothing of ～ingで表現しています。（例）She thinks nothing of telling her boss he's stupid.「彼女は上司のことを平気で馬鹿だと言う」。
19. take a night to think it over「一晩かけて（寝て）考え直す」。例文をもう一つ。I'll think it over at my leisure.「暇な時によく考えてみるよ」。
20. think twice before ～「～する前に熟考する」。この機会にthink through「じっくり考える」の使い方もチェック！（例）It's important to think things through.「物事をじっくり考えることが大切なんだ」。
