穴埋め英作文1・2・3（作文179回）　10時・怒っている・しゃべらなきゃ～

水曜日は「英作文」の日。日々の生活の中でよく使う言い回しを英語で表現してみましょう。練習は三つのパート（穴埋め問題）に分かれています。それでは始めましょう。

【Part 1】
日本語の意味になるようにカッコに適切な語を入れてください。

1. OK, I'll (　　　) you there at 10.
→じゃあ、そこで10時にね。

2. He's this (　　　) to getting a promotion.
→彼はもう少しで昇進するところまで来ている。

3. I showed up at the party (　　　) anything.
→パーティーに手ぶらで行った。

【解説】
1. I'll see you there at 10.は「そこで10時に会おう」という意味。（例）I'll see you at the usual place and time.「いつもの所でいつもの時間に会おう」。
2. come close to ～ing「もう少しで～しそうである」。thisは強調するための副詞。（例）I often come really close to mixing up the accelerator and brake.「アクセルとブレーキをよく間違えそうになる」。
3.「手ぶらで」をwithout anything「何も持たずに」で表現。go empty-handed「手ぶらで行く」。この言い回しも覚えておきましょう。

【Part 2】
aとbが同じ意味になるようにカッコに適切な語を入れてください。

4. a. Surely you have some idea why she's angry.
b. Surely it must (　　　) to you why she's angry.
→なぜ彼女が怒っているのか、思い当たる節があるだろう。

5. a. You're the reason I'm able to take things easy now.
b. If it (　　　) for you, I might be in big trouble now.
→私が今笑っていられるのは、あなたのおかげです。

【解説】
4.「思い当たる節」をoccur「ふと思いつく」で表現。（例）It didn't occur to me to take a picture of it.「すっかり写真を撮るのを忘れていた」。
5. If it weren't for youで「あなたがいなければ」という意味になります。（例）If it weren't for the Internet, I'd have to commute every day.「インターネットがなければ、毎日通勤しなくてはならないだろうな」。take things easy「のんびりする」、be in big trouble「大変なことになっている」。

【Part 3】
日本語の意味になるようにカッコに適切な語を入れてください。最初の文字が与えられています。

6. I should have kept ( q　　　), but I couldn't ( h　　　) opening my mouth and ( s　　　) everybody I didn't know what I was ( t　　　) about.
→しゃべらなきゃいいのに、ついしゃべってしまって、ぼろが出た。

【解答】quiet, help, showing, talking

【解説】
keep quiet「黙っている」。couldn't help opening my mouth「つい口を開いてしまった」。ここでは「ぼろが出る」をshowing everybody I didn't know what I was talking about「何を話しているのかわかっていないことをみんなに教えてしまった」で表現しています。次のように言い換えてもいいでしょう。I shouldn't have opened my mouth, but I couldn't help it, and everybody saw that I didn't know what I was talking about.

occurを使った英文をいくつか挙げておきましょう。

A good idea just occurred to me.
→今いい考えが思い浮かんだ。
It just occurred to me to check my e-mail.
→メールをチェックしないと。
Somehow it occurred to me to write her a letter.
→何となく思い立って彼女に手紙を書いたの。
It never occurred to me to ask how you were feeling.
→君がどんな気分だったか聞くことなんて思ってもみなかった。
This just occurred to me, but how much Japanese do you speak?
→今ふと思ったのですが、日本語をどのくらい話せるのですか？
