《今日のイディオム》thin out
「水を入れて少し薄めたら」─ Add some water to thin it out a little.
形容詞thin「薄い」は動詞としても使えます。「薄くする」はthin outで表現。thin outには「絞り込む」という意味もあります。We need to thin out the field of applicants for this job.「この仕事への応募者を絞り込む必要がある」。例文をもう一つ。Your hair has thinned out.「髪が薄くなったね」。この場合のthin outは「薄くなる」。
