木曜日は「英文法」の日。Practice before theory.「理屈より実践」。さまざな例文を参考にして、使える英文法を身につけましょう。今回も基本動詞Sayを取り上げます。

◆Say使いこなす！ (2)◆
日常会話の中でよく用いられる例文を五つ挙げてみます。

【リピーティング】
英文11～15をリピートしましょう。

11. It's hard to say.
→それはどうかな。
12. People say they serve good sushi there.
→あそこはいい寿司ネタを出すそうだ。
13. It is said that she knows how to use a computer.
→彼女はコンピューターが使えるんだって。
14. What do you say to a cup of coffee?
→コーヒーを一杯いかがですか？
15. That goes without saying.
→それは言うまでもない。




▽解説・穴埋め

【解説】
11. It's hard to say.の文字通りの意味は「言うのは難しい」。（例）It's hard to say whether he believes it.「彼がそれを信じているかどうかははっきりしない」。
12. People say (that) ～「～だそうだ（～と人は言う）」。（例）People say he has the gift of gab.「彼には弁舌の才があると人は言う」。
13. It is said that ～で「～だと言われている」という意味。（例）It is said that care killed the cat.「病は気からと言われている」。
14.「～はどう？、～しない？」と声をかける場合には、What do you say to ～が使えます。toは前置詞。（例）What do you say to coming to our party this Saturday?「今週の土曜日のパーティーに来ない？」。
15. That goes without saying.が「それは言うまでもない」に当たる言い回し。（例）You should practice every day. That goes without saying.「毎日練習すべきだよ。それは言うまでもない」。

【穴埋め】
日本語の意味なるようにカッコに適切な語を入れてください。

【解説】
16.「～し難い」をIt's hard to sayで表現。one is better than the other「どちらがいいか」。（例）It's hard to say what made it so great.「どうしてあんなによかったのかな」。
17. Peopleの代わりにTheyを使っている点に注目。（例）They say that travel broadens the mind.「旅行をすると物の考え方が広くなる」。
18. It is said that ～の後に格言や諺がよく使われます。The early bird catches the worm.「早起きの鳥は虫を捕まえる」で「早起きは三文の徳」を表現。（例）It is said in Japan that modesty is virtue.「日本では謙虚が美徳と言われている」。
19. What do you say (that) の後に文を続けている点に注目。（例）What do you say we talk about the good old days over a drink?「酒でも飲みながら、昔話にでも花を咲かさないか？」。call it a day「今日は終わりにする」。
20. It goes without saying (that) ～で「～は言うまでもない」の意味に。（例）It goes without saying that you should return the favor.「お返しすべきなのは言うまでもないよ」。apologize to ～「～に謝る」。

→失敗は成功のもとって言うだろう。

There are some things that need to be said.
