木曜日は「英文法」の日。Practice before theory.「理屈より実践」。さまざな例文を参考にして、使える英文法を身につけましょう。今回は基本動詞Sayを取り上げます。

◆Say使いこなす！ (1)◆
日常会話の中でよく用いられる例文を五つ挙げてみます。

【リピーティング】
英文1～5をリピートしましょう。

1. I just wanted to try saying it.
→ちょっと言ってみたかっただけ。
2. I may have said too much to him.
→彼に言い過ぎたかもしれない。
3. I'm not saying whether it's good or bad
→それが良いとか悪いとか言っているんじゃないよ。
4. I don't know what to say to that.
→それに対して何と言えばいいかわからない。
5. It says here "Standing Room Only."
→ここに「只今お立ち見」と書いてある。




▽解説・穴埋め

【解説】
1. say itで「それを言う（他動詞）」。（例）Did I say something silly?「なんか馬鹿なこと言ったかい？」、What did you say just now?「今何て言ったの？」。
2. say too much to ～「～に対して言い過ぎる」。toが使われている点に注目。（例）You'll never guess what he said to me.「彼が私に何と言ったかあなたには決してわからない」。
3. 「say＋(that) 文」の使い方がポイント。（例）He said that you wanted to talk to me.「彼が言ってたけど、僕に話があるんだって」。
4. what to sayで「言うべきこと（what I should say）」の意味。（例）I couldn't think of what to say.「何を言えばいいか思いつかなかった」。
5. この場合のsay「～と書いてある」という意味。（例）Look at this. It says "100% genuine."「見てこれ、『100%本物』って書いてある」。

【穴埋め】
日本語の意味なるようにカッコに適切な語を入れてください。

【解説】
6. say goodbye「お別れを言う」。（例）She ran up to me on the street to say 'Hi'.「彼女は道で僕の所に駆け寄って来てハーイと声を掛けた」。
7. the first thing (that) he said to meのthatが略されています。（例）That was the last word he said to me.「それが彼が私に言った最後の言葉だった」。
8. It's never too late to say you're sorry.の文字通りの意味は「謝るのに遅過ぎるということはない」。（例） The least you could do would be to say that you're sorry.「最低限ごめんくらい言えばいいのに」。
9. Not knowing what to sayはAs I didn't know what to sayと言い換え可能。what to sayを使った例文をもう一つ。I'm so fed up I don't know what to say.「呆れてものも言えないよ」。
10. The guidebook says (that) ～「ガイドブックに～だと書いてある」。同じような例文をもう一つ。The guidebook says this restaurant has a dress code.「ガイドブックにこのレストランにはドレスコードがあると書いてある」。must-see「必見のもの」。

→ここで発言してもいいですか？
The eyes say more than the mouth.
→目は口ほどにものを言う。
She began to say what she really meant.
→彼女は本当のことを話し始めた。
You don't have to take what he says seriously.
→彼の言うことを深刻に受け取らなくてもいい。
The letter says that she got married last month.
→その手紙には「彼女は先月結婚した」と書いてある。
I want to hear what consumers really have to say.
→消費者の生の声が聞きたいね。
I couldn't make out what she was trying to say to me.
→彼女が僕に何を言おうとしたのか僕にはわからなかった。
Why do they say you have to learn English to survive?
→どうして英語ができないと生き残れないなんて言うんだ？
It's not becoming of a professor to say things like that.
→そのようなことを言うなんて教授にふさわしくない。
