水曜日は「英作文」の日。日々の生活の中でよく使う言い回しを英語で表現してみましょう。練習は三つのパート（穴埋め問題）に分かれています。それでは始めましょう。

【Part 1】
日本語の意味になるようにカッコに適切な語を入れてください。

【Part 1】

【解説】
1. Imagine my surprise!の文字通りの意味は「僕の驚きを想像してみて！」。（例）I was surprised myself!「我ながら驚いたよ！」。
2. before she even knew it「彼女でさえ知らぬ間に」で「瞬く間に」を表現。（例）Before I knew it, I was fast asleep at the meeting.「知らぬ間に、会議で熟睡していた」。
3. この場合のlastは動詞。last longで「長く続かない、持ちこたえる」という意味。（例）He's now into jogging. But it won't last long.「彼は今、ジョギングにはまってる。でも長続きしないだろうな」。

aとbが同じ意味になるようにカッコに適切な語を入れてください。

5.「無理をする」をoverdo it「やり過ぎる」、force it「無理矢理やる」で表現。（例）I hope you don't take it too far.「あまり無理しない方がいいよ」。

日本語の意味になるようにカッコに適切な語を入れてください。最初の文字が与えられています。

→TOEICの点数がそのまま会話力とイコールになるとは思えないけど、判断する材料がそれしかないから仕方がない。

【解答】doubt, fluency, criterion, deciding

【解説】
I doubt that ～「～は疑わしい、疑問に思う」。fluency「流暢さ」で「会話力」、go hand in hand「密接に関連している」で「イコール」を表現。「材料」をcriterion「（判断するための）基準」を使って言い換えています。decide「決める」。translate directly into ～「直接～になる」を使って、次のように言い換えてもいいでしょう。We know that TOEIC scores don't translate directly into conversation ability, but they're all we have to go by.

overdoを使った英文をいくつか挙げておきましょう。

Don't overdo it when you exercise.
→運動する時はやり過ぎてはいけない。
How are you? You're not overdoing it, I hope.
→身体の調子はどう？無理しないでね。
Don't overdo things or you'll wear yourself out.
→やり過ぎはいけないよ。疲れるだけだから。
When you start jogging, be sure not to overdo it.
→ジョギングを始めるなら、やりすぎないようにね。
Overdoing it at the fitness club made me really sore.
→フィットネスクラブで運動しすぎですごい筋肉痛です。
