穴埋め英作文1・2・3（作文175回）　彼の話・円高・上のレベルを～

第175回

水曜日は「英作文」の日。日々の生活の中でよく使う言い回しを英語で表現してみましょう。練習は三つのパート（穴埋め問題）に分かれています。それでは始めましょう。

【Part 1】
日本語の意味になるようにカッコに適切な語を入れてください。

1. He never gets to the (　　　).
→彼の話は要を得ない。

2. This jacket is (　　　) style this winter.
→今年の冬、流行っているのはこのジャケットだ。

3. You always try to (　　　) somebody else.
→いつも人のせいにしようとするんだから。

【解説】
1. never get to the point「決して要点を言わない」で「話の要を得ない」を表現。（例）Stop beating around the bush and get to the point.「そんなまどろっこしい言い方しないで、はっきり言えよ」。
2.「流行している」be in style、「流行遅れの」はbe out of styleを言います。（例）What's in style these days?「最近はどんなものが流行ってるの？」。
3. blameは「せいにする、咎める、非難する」という意味。（例）You've got nobody to blame but yourself.「責めるんだったら自分だね」。

【Part 2】
aとbが同じ意味になるようにカッコに適切な語を入れてください。

4. a. The yen is still high against the dollar.
b. The yen is still (　　　) up against the dollar.
→円高が進んでいる。

5. a. This new announcer keeps stumbling.
b. This new announcer keeps getting (　　　) up.
→この新人アナウンサーはさっきからとっちてばかりいる。

4. high / low against ～「～に対して高い / 低い」、go up / down against ～「～に対して上がる / 下がる」。（例）The high yen is still going on.「依然として円高が進んでいる」。
5. stumble「つかえる」とget tripped up「間違える、失敗する」の使い方に注目。（例）I thought I had my lines memorized, but I still bungled them.「せりふは全部覚えたと思ったのだが、それでもうまく言えなかった」。

日本語の意味になるようにカッコに適切な語を入れてください。最初の文字が与えられています。

→上のレベルを目指すよりも、今のレベルを保つことの方が大事だと思います。

【解答】Before, move, focus, keeping

【解説】
before ～「～する前に」で「～よりも」、「上のレベルを目指す」をtry to move up to the next level「次のレベルに上がろうとする」で表現しています。focus on ～「～に焦点を当てる」。keep what we haveの意味は「今持っているもの（力）を保つ」。次のようにも言えます。Before we aim at an upgrade, I think we should concentrate on maintaining our present status.

【リピーティング】
英文1～3をリピートしましょう。

英文4～5（a, b）をリピートしましょう。

keep ～ingを使った英文をいくつか挙げておきましょう。

Don't forget to keep plugging away.
→地道な努力をするのを忘れてはいけない。
You can't keep doing this job forever.
→この仕事をずっとやってるわけにはいかない。
You keep turning me down on one pretext or another.
→君はいつも何だかんだ理由をつけては断るんだね。
I intend to keep working at this job as long as I can move around.
→足腰が立つ内は、この仕事を続ける積もりでいる。
Keep talking like that, and we're going to pull ourselves off this project.
→君がそんなことを言うんだったら、我々はこのプロジェクトから引き上げる。
