木曜日は「英文法」の日。Practice before theory.「理屈より実践」。さまざな例文を参考にして、使える英文法を身につけましょう。今回も基本動詞Tellを取り上げます。

◆Tellを使いこなす！ (2)◆
日常会話の中でよく用いられる例文を五つ挙げてみます。

英文11～15をリピートしましょう。

11. Tell me if I'm wrong.
→間違っていたら言って。
12. Is he telling the truth? Well, yes and no.
→彼は真実を言ってるかって？さあ、どうかな。
13. Don't tell me. It's on the tip of my tongue.
→言わないでよ。ここまで出かかってるんだから。
14. I was told to be here at nine.
→9時にここに来るように言われた。
15. There's no telling how they really feel.
→彼らの本心はどうだかわからない。

【解説】
11. Tell me if ～「もし～なら言って、教えて」。（例）Tell me if you know where he went.「彼がどこに行ったのか知っているなら教えて」。
12. tell the truth「真実を語る、本当のことを言う」。（例）I didn't have the courage to tell the truth.「私には本当のことを言う勇気がなかった」。
13. Don't tell me.「言わないで、教えないで」。on the tip of one's tongue「舌の先にのっている」で「ここまで出かかっている」という意味に。（例）I know it. It's on the tip of my tongue.「それ知ってるよ。喉（舌の先）まで出かかってるんだけど」。
14. be told to ～（受け身）」～するように言われる」。（例）I was told to take the pain.「痛みを我慢するように言われた」。
15. There's no telling ～「～はわからない（言えない）」。「本心」をhow they really feel「本当はどう感じているか」で表現。（例）There's no telling what might happen next.「次にどうなるかはわからない」。

日本語の意味なるようにカッコに適切な語を入れてください。

【解説】
16. hurt「痛い」。（例）How about here? Does it hurt? Tell me if it hurts.「ここはどうですか？痛みますか？痛かったら言ってくださいね」。
17. To tell you the truthが「実は、実を言うと」に当たる言い回し。（例）To tell you the truth, I learned that from a friend of mine.「実はね、友達から教わったんだ」。be out of work「失業している」。
18. この場合のDon't tell meは「まさか」の意味。（例）Uh-oh, don't tell me you bought a new car.「おいおい、まさか新車を買ったんじゃないだろうな」。
19. without being told to do ～の文字通りの意味は「～をするようにと言われなければ」。be told to ～を使った例文をもう一つ。（例）He was told not to go there again.「彼は二度とそこに行かないように言われた」。
20. この場合のlastは動詞で「続く、もつ」。（例）There's no telling how long their marriage / the bus drivers' strike will last.「彼らの結婚 / バスの運転手のストライキがどのくらい続くかわからない」。

→よくそう言われるんですよ。
Tell you what -- let's sleep on it.
→こうしよう -- 一晩寝て考えよう。
It's hard to tell where to go from here.
→これからどうすべきか目途が立たないんだよ。
I have to tell you that I really appreciate it.
→本当に感謝してるってぜひ言っておきたいんだ。
The enemy was told to surrender or be annihilated.
→降伏か全滅のどちらかしかないといと敵に伝えられた。
What good will telling people about the problem do?
→その問題について人に言って何かいいことがあるのかい？

→それをビジネスに活かせるかどうかはわからない。
