穴埋め英作文1・2・3（作文172回）　景色・時間・口幅ったい言い方～

水曜日は「英作文」の日。日々の生活の中でよく使う言い回しを英語で表現してみましょう。練習は三つのパート（穴埋め問題）に分かれています。それでは始めましょう。

【Part 1】
日本語の意味になるようにカッコに適切な語を入れてください。

1. I felt (　　　) in by the wonderful scenery.
→すばらしい景色で思わず吸い込まれそうになった。

2. (　　　) I want to do is have an ordinary lifestyle.
→普通の生活ができればそれで十分。

3. Should I copy this (　　　) color, or black-and-white?
→これカラーでコピーしますか、それともモノクロで？

1. draw in「吸い込む」。feel drawn inで「吸い込まれる」を表現。I thought the wonderful scenery was going to draw me in.でも同じような意味に。
2. All I want to doの文字通りの意味は「私がしたいことのすべて」。（例）All I want to do is loll around the house.「家でごろごろしていたいだけです」。
3. in color, in black-and-whiteと前置詞はinを使います。（例）Printing in color uses up too much ink, so print in black-and-white wherever possible.「カラー印刷はインクがもったいないので、できるだけ白黒印刷してください」。

【Part 2】
aとbが同じ意味になるようにカッコに適切な語を入れてください。

4. a. I've got a lot of time on my hands.
b. I have (　　　) but time on my hands.
→時間を持て余している。

5. a. Do all the buses departing here go to Tokyo Station?
b. Are all these buses (　　　) for Tokyo Station?
→ここから出ているバスは東京駅行きのみですか？

4. この場合のnothing but「～だけ」。nothing but ～には「～にすぎない」という意味もあります。（例）You could say it's nothing but baseball, but it's still baseball.「たかが野球、されど野球」。
5. depart「出発する」。be bound for ～「～行き」。（例）Take the Shibuya-bound bus.「渋谷行きのバスに乗って」。

日本語の意味になるようにカッコに適切な語を入れてください。最初の文字が与えられています。

6. I don't want to ( s　　　) like I'm ( b　　　) or anything, but I am ( b　　　) at web page design than ( a　　　) else.
→口幅ったい言い方をするようですが、ホームページ作成に関しては誰にも負けません。

【解答】sound, bragging, better, anybody

【解説】
「口幅ったい言い方（偉そうな口をきく）」をI don't want to sound like I'm bragging or anything「何か自慢しているように聞こえるのは嫌なのですが」で表現。be better at ～ than anybody else「他の誰よりも～がうまい」、つまり、「誰にも負けない」という意味。次のように言い換えてもいいでしょう。Not to brag or anything, but I do think there's nobody better at web page design than me.

nothing but ～を使った英文をいくつか挙げておきましょう。

That client does nothing but complain.
→あのクライアントは文句ばかり言う。
That's nothing but a groundless rumor.
→あれは根も葉もない噂に過ぎない。
His argument is nothing but empty theory.
→彼の主張は単なる机上の空論にすぎない。
It's been nothing but meetings since this morning.
→今朝からずっと会議ばかり。
We've had nothing but rain lately, so business is dead.
→最近は雨ばかり降っているから、商売上がったりだ。
