水曜日は「英作文」の日。日々の生活の中でよく使う言い回しを英語で表現してみましょう。練習は三つのパート（穴埋め問題）に分かれています。それでは始めましょう。

【Part 1】
日本語の意味になるようにカッコに適切な語を入れてください。

1. How (　　　) can I check out?
→いつまでにチェックアウトすればいいですか？

2. That's a (　　　) essay.
→そのレポートはよく書けてるよ。

3. We don't have to go into (　　　).
→細かいことはいいんじゃない。

【解説】
1. How late「どれくらい遅く」で「いつまでに」を表現。（例）How late are you open on Sundays?「日曜日はどれくらい遅くまで開いてるんですか？」。
2. well-writtenは「うまく書けている」という意味の形容詞。（例）That was a well-organized speech.「あれはよくまとまった話だった」。
3. go into detail「詳しく話す」。（例）I'm not too sure about the details.「詳しいことはよくわかりません」。

【Part 2】
aとbが同じ意味になるようにカッコに適切な語を入れてください。

→後でファクスを送ってくれる？

5. a. Will this get me to Shibuya Station?

4. Would you mind ～ing「～してもらえませんか？」。faxは動詞としても使えます。（例）I'll fax you a map showing the location of my office.「僕のオフィスの場所がわかる地図を君にファクスするよ」。
5. a. Will this (much money) get me to Shibuya Station?ではmuch moneyが略されています。for this much「この金額で」。

日本語の意味になるようにカッコに適切な語を入れてください。最初の文字が与えられています。

→前の上司は天下りだったが、今度の上司は現場からのたたき上げだ。

【解説】
previous「前の、以前の」。retired bureaucrat「退職した官僚」で「天下り」を表現。fight one's way to the topが「たたき上げ」に当たる言い回しです。My last boss was a retired bureaucrat living off the fat of the land, but the new one is a self-made man.でも同じような意味になります。live off the fat of the land「贅沢な暮らしをする」、a self-made man「自力でたたき上げた人」。
