木曜日は「英文法」の日。Practice before theory.「理屈より実践」。さまざな例文を参考にして、使える英文法を身につけましょう。今回は基本動詞Hearを取り上げます。

◆Hear使いこなす！ (1)◆
日常会話の中でよく用いられる例文を五つ挙げてみます。

【リピーティング】
英文1～5をリピートしましょう。

1. My grandmother can't hear well.
→祖母は耳が遠い。
2. I don't even want to hear about him anymore.
→あいつの話なんかしたくもない。
3. I look forward to hearing from you soon.
→あなたからのお便りを楽しみにしています。
4. I haven't heard any such thing.
→そんなことは聞いてませんよ。
5. Let's hear a big hand for our special guest.
→スペシャルゲストに大きな拍手をお願いします。




▽解説・穴埋め

【解説】
1. can't hear well「よく聞こえない」で「耳が遠い」を表現。（例）I can't hear you very well.「電話が遠いんですが」。
2. I don't even want to hear about him anymore.「彼についてはもう聞きたくもない」で「あいつの話なんかしたくもない」という意味に。（例）Have you heard about Steve and Linda?「スティーブとリンダについて聞いたかい？」。
3. hear from ～「～から便りがある」。（例）Wait until you hear from me.「私から連絡があるまで待ってて」。
4. 1～3のhearは自動詞。このhearは目的語（any such thing）を取る他動詞。（例）Don't believe everything you hear.「聞いたことをすべて信じるな」。
5. hear a big hand for ～「～のために大きな拍手を聞く」で「大きな拍手をする」という意味に。（例）Let's hear a big round of applause for Prof. Harris.「皆様、ハリス教授に盛大な拍手をお願いします」。

【穴埋め】
日本語の意味なるようにカッコに適切な語を入れてください。

【解説】
6. I can't hear as well as I used to「かつてのようにはよく聞こえない」で「聴力が落ちてきた」を表現しています。この後に「年だな / 年かな」と続ける場合は、I must be getting old. / Maybe it's my age.と言います。
7. hear of ～「～の噂を聞く」。That's the first I've heard of it.が「初耳」に当たる言い回し。（例）Have you heard of this self-help book?「この自己啓発本について聞いたことある？」。
8.「こちらから連絡が行く」をhear from us「我々から便りがある」で表現。（例）I found it very reassuring to hear from you.「あなたから便りがあってとても安心した」。
9. Those are just the words (that) I wanted to hear.のthatが略されています。the wordsがhearの目的語。I was hoping you'd say that.でも同じような意味に。
10. make a toast「乾杯する」。Let's hear it everyone -- all together.この後に続く言葉は……Cheers!「乾杯！」ですね。

→彼について聞いたことがあるかもしれない。
I hope I never hear his voice again.
→あいつとはもう口も聞きたくない。
I want to hear directly from the consumer.
→消費者の生の声が聞きたい。
It's impossible to hear her story without crying.
→泣かずに彼女の話は聞けないよ。
I've never heard a word of appreciation from her.
→彼女から労いのことばを一言も聞いたことがない。
She's the type who won't hear a word you're saying.
→彼女は君の言うことには一切耳を貸さないよ。
If I don't hear from you in a week, I'll give you a call.
→もし1週間連絡がなければ、こちらからお電話いたします。
