木曜日は「英文法」の日。Practice before theory.「理屈より実践」。さまざな例文を参考にして、使える英文法を身につけましょう。今回も基本動詞Speakを取り上げます。

◆Speakを使いこなす！ (2)◆
日常会話の中でよく用いられる例文を五つ挙げてみます。

【リピーティング】
英文11～15をリピートしましょう。

11. Don't be afraid to speak up.
→はっきり意見を言えばいい。
12. You shouldn't speak ill of others.
→人の悪口を言うべきではない。
13. My salary is nothing to speak of.
→僕の稼ぎなんか微々たるものだよ。
14. Speaking of food, I almost never cook.
→食べ物と言えば、僕はほとんど料理はしないんだ。
15. Honestly speaking, I thought the movie was boring.
→正直に言うと、映画は退屈だったね。




▽解説・穴埋め

【解説】
11. 「はっきり意見を言う、大声ではっきり話す」はspeak upで表現します。（例）Thanks for speaking up for me at the meeting.「会議でしっかり弁護してくれてありがとう」。
12. speak ill of othersが「悪口を言う」に当たる言い回しです。（例）She thinks nothing of speaking ill of others.「彼女は平気で人の悪口を言う」。
13. nothingとto speak of「取り立てて言うほどの」を組み合わせて、「微々たるもの」を表現。They pay me peanuts.でも同じような意味になります。一緒に覚えておきましょう。
14. speaking of ～で「～と言えば」の意味に。似たような表現にwhen it comes to ～があります。（例）You seem to forget all about logic and reason when it comes to politics. 「政治のことになると、君は論理とか理性とかおかまいなしになるようだね」。
15. honestly speaking「正直に言うと」。-ly speakingの表現例を挙げておきましょう。frankly speaking「率直に言うと」、medically speaking「医学的に言うと」、psychologically speaking「心理学的に言うと」、roughly speaking「大雑把に言うと」。

【穴埋め】
日本語の意味なるようにカッコに適切な語を入れてください。

16. speak upと同じような意味を表すspeak out「遠慮なく言う」。もう一つ。speak one's mind「本音を言う」。（例）You've got to learn to speak your mind.「自分の意見を言うようにした方がいいよ」。
17. speak ill ofのillをwellに代えると「褒める」が表現できます。（例）He's spoken well of by his colleagues.「彼は同僚からの評判がいい」。
18.「大した物は載っていない」をThere's nothing to speak ofで表現。（例）The plot of the drama wasn't much to speak of.「そのドラマの筋書きはあまり大したことなかったね」。
19. be (a little) into ～「～に（ちょっと）はまっている」。釣りに関連した例文を一つ。Speaking of fishing, I had a great day last week.「釣りと言えば、先週はとってもよかったよ（たくさん釣れた）」。
20. generally speaking「一般的に言うと」。-ly speakingを使った例文一つ。Strictly speaking, this is not a nonfiction novel.「厳密に言うと、これはノンフィクション小説ではない」。

Speakを使った例文をさらに追加しておきます。

I've never heard him speak ill of others.
→彼が他人の悪口を言うのを聞いたことがない。
Our mail order business is nothing to speak of.
→通信販売はほとんど儲かっていない。
English is spoken there as an official language.
→そこでは英語が公用語として話されている。
Grammatically speaking, this sentence is correct.
→文法的に言うと、この文は正しい。
Statistically speaking, these numbers are meaningless.
→統計的に言うと、この数字は意味がない。
Do you know what language is spoken in that country?
→その国では何語が話されているのか知っていますか？
Teach me typical gestures used in English-speaking countries.
→英語圏特有のジェスチャーを教えてください。
These error patterns are typical of Japanese speakers of English.
→この間違いのパターンは日本人の英語話者に典型的に見られるものです。

→オブザーバーとして言わせてもらえば、あの企画は没にしたほうがいい。
