穴埋め英作文1・2・3（作文170回）　口だけ・営業・技術が進歩し～

水曜日は「英作文」の日。日々の生活の中でよく使う言い回しを英語で表現してみましょう。練習は三つのパート（穴埋め問題）に分かれています。それでは始めましょう。

【Part 1】
日本語の意味になるようにカッコに適切な語を入れてください。

1. He's all (　　　), no action.
→彼は口だけで、行動が伴わない。

2. Your shoelaces are (　　　).
→靴ひもがほどけてるよ。

3. I had a (　　　) you'd say that.
→そう言うだろうという気がしてたよ。

【解説】
1. all talk「すべて話」、no action「行動なし」で「口だけで、行動が伴わない」を表現。（例）Quit talking about it and do it.「口だけではなく、やってみろよ」。
2. 「結ぶ」はtie、「ほどく」はuntie。これを受け身にして、Your shoelaces are untied.で「ほどけている」を表現。（例）Tie your shoelaces.「靴のひもを結びなさい」。
3. have a feeling (that) ～「～だという気がする」。you'dはyou wouldの短縮形。（例）I knew you'd ask that.「それを聞いてくるだろうと思ってたよ」。

aとbが同じ意味になるようにカッコに適切な語を入れてください。

4. a. I wasn't cut out for sales.
b. I'm not sales (　　　).
→僕は営業に向いていない。

5. a. You look ten years younger without your beard.
b. Shaving off your beard (　　　) ten years off you.
→髭剃ったら10歳は若返って見える。

5. Shaving（動名詞）を主語にしている点とtake ten years off a person「人から年齢を10歳取る」のtakeの使い方に注目。（例）A good shave can take years off your look.「髭がないと若返るね」。

日本語の意味になるようにカッコに適切な語を入れてください。最初の文字が与えられています。

【解説】
advances「進歩、向上」、make ～ convenient「～を便利にする」。so ～ thatの使い方にも注目。tend to ～で「～の傾向にある」という意味。choose the easiest way of doing thingsの文字通りの意味は「物事をするのに最も簡単な方法を選ぶ」。次のようにも言えます。With the advance of a variety of technologies, life has become much more convenient. As a result, people now tend to choose the easiest way of doing things.

cut out ～を使った英文をいくつか挙げておきましょう。

I can tell I'm not cut out for this job.
→今の仕事に向いてないと自分で思うのよね。
I don't think he is cut out to do this job.
→彼はこの仕事に向いているとは思えない。

→私にはどういう仕事が向いていると思いますか？
