put down「下に置く」。you can't put it down「下に置けない」で「途中で読むのをやめらなくなる」を表現しています。例文を一つ。Why don't you put your fork down for a second? You've been eating too fast.「ちょっとフォークを置いたらどう？食べるのが早過ぎるよ」。put downには「書き留める」という意味もあります。I should've put down what he said.「彼が言ったことを書き留めておけばよかった」。
