穴埋め英作文1・2・3（作文165回）　おかしい・浮かない顔・英語の授業を～

水曜日は「英作文」の日。日々の生活の中でよく使う言い回しを英語で表現してみましょう。練習は三つのパート（穴埋め問題）に分かれています。それでは始めましょう。

【Part 1】
日本語の意味になるようにカッコに適切な語を入れてください。

1. What are you (　　　) at?
→何がおかしいの？

2. She's tougher than she (　　　).
→彼女って見かけによらずタフだよね。

3. He (　　　) himself into the work 100%.
→彼はその仕事に全力投球した。

【解説】
1. laugh at 「～を笑う」で「おかしい」を表現。What's so funny?とも言えます。
2.「見かけ」はlookで表現できます。（例）He's older than he looks.「彼は見かけより老けている」。He may not look it, but he's tough.でも同じような意味になります。
3. throw oneself into ～「～に打ち込む」と100 %を組み合わせて「全力投球する」を表現。次の言い回しも覚えておきましょう。（例）He devoted his entire life to painting.「彼は一生涯絵に打ち込んだ」。

aとbが同じ意味になるようにカッコに適切な語を入れてください。

4. a. Why do you look so glum?

→何でそんなに浮かない顔をしてるの？

5. a. It's hard to tell where to go from here.
b. We have no idea where to (　　　) this thing.
→これからどうすべきかわからない。

4. glum「浮かない顔の、むっつりした」、long face「暗い顔」。（例）Why the angry face?「どうして怒った顔をしてるの？」。
5. where to go from here「ここからどこへ行けばいいか」をwhere to take this thing「これをどこへ持って行けばいいか」で言い換えています。（例）I was at a loss for where to put my eyes.「目のやり場に困った」。

日本語の意味になるようにカッコに適切な語を入れてください。最初の文字が与えられています。

6. It seems that ( m　　　) and ( m　　　) universities are organizing their English classes ( a　　　) to how ( a　　　) their students are.
→英語の授業を習熟度別にしている大学が増えているようです。

【解答】more, more, according, advanced

【解説】
more and more ～「ますます多くの～」、organize「編成する」。according to how advanced their students areの文字通りの意味は「学生がどれくらい進歩しているかによって（従って）」。次のようにも言えます。It seems universities are increasingly organizing their classes according to the students' degree of advancement.
