水曜日は「英作文」の日。日々の生活の中でよく使う言い回しを英語で表現してみましょう。練習は三つのパート（穴埋め問題）に分かれています。それでは始めましょう。
【Part 1】
日本語の意味になるようにカッコに適切な語を入れてください。
1. How about ( ) on where to eat?
→どこへ食べに行くか多数決にする？
2. It's good to know your ( ).
→自分の限界を知っておくのはいいことだよ。
3. Do I make the ( )?
→（どれにするか）私が選べるのですか？

【解説】
1. vote on ～「～に投票する」。Where should we go to eat? (Do you) Want to take a vote?とも言えます。
2. know one's limitations「（自分の）限界を知る」。（例）I decided to retire because I feel I've reached my limit.「限界を感じましたので、引退することにしました」。
3. make the choice「（その）選択をする」。次の言い回しも覚えておきましょう。Am I the one who has to decide between the two?

aとbが同じ意味になるようにカッコに適切な語を入れてください。

→痛っ！紙で手を切った。

【解説】
4. get a paper cut「紙（の端）で手を切る」をgiveを使ってgive oneself a paper cutで言い換えています。文字通りの意味は「自分自身にペーパーカットを与える」。（例）I think I'll give myself a week off.「一週間休もうと思う」。
5. maudlinは「涙もろい」という意味の形容詞。（例）She's a cute drunk.「彼女は酔っぱらうと可愛いよね」、He's a happy drunk.「彼は酔うと陽気になる」。

日本語の意味になるようにカッコに適切な語を入れてください。最初の文字が与えられています。

→これほど不祥事が続くと、警察は信頼できないと思われても仕方がない。

【解答】scandals, continue, natural, faith
【解説】
「不祥事」はscandal「スキャンダル」でいいでしょう。continue「続く、継続する」。only naturalで「仕方がない」を表現。lose faith in ～で「～への信頼を失う」という意味。If this kind of scandal continues to plague the police, people will naturally lose faith in them. でも同じような意味になります。plague「悩ます」。
