水曜日は「英作文」の日。日々の生活の中でよく使う言い回しを英語で表現してみましょう。練習は三つのパート（穴埋め問題）に分かれています。それでは始めましょう。

【Part 1】
日本語の意味になるようにカッコに適切な語を入れてください。

1. This cup has a (　　　) in it.
→このコップにはひびが入ってる。

2. That rule doesn't (　　　) to this case.
→その規則はこの場合に当てはまらない。

3. This light bulb seems to have (　　　) out.
→この電球は切れちゃったみたいだね。

【解説】
1.「ひび」はcrackと言います。This cup is cracked.でも同じ意味になります。
2. apply to ～「～に当てはまる」。（例）His advice doesn't apply to my situation.「彼のアドバイスは僕の状況には当てはまらない」。
3.「（電球が）切れる」はburn outで表現します。burn outには「燃え尽きる」という意味もあります。（例）He burned out and quit his job.「彼は燃え尽きて、仕事を辞めた」。seem to have＋過去分詞で「～してしまったようだ」の意味。

aとbが同じ意味になるようにカッコに適切な語を入れてください。

4. a. The schedule hasn't been set yet.
b. Scheduling is (　　　).
→予定は未定。

5. a. Don't jump to conclusions.
b. Don't get (　　　) of yourself.
→早とちりをするなよ。

4. hasn't been set yet「まだ決まっていない」をpending「未決定の」で言い換えています。（例）There are so many pending issues to discuss.「話さなくてはいけない未解決の問題が多過ぎる」。
5. Don't jump to conclusions.「結論に飛びつくな」とDon't get ahead of oneself「先走りをするな」で「早とちりをするな」を表現しています。（例）Not so fast! Listen to the whole story.「早とちりをしないで！人の話をちゃんと聞けよ」。

→あの英会話学校って、大々的に宣伝していないけど、口コミで生徒が集まってくるんだって。

【解答】do, advertising, hear, mouth

【解説】
「大々的に宣伝する」をdo major advertisingで表現しています。they hear about itで「それについて耳にする」とby word of mouth「口コミで」を使っている点に注目。次のようにも言えます。They don't do any large-scale advertising for the English conversation school. Most students say they hear about it by word of mouth.

seem to have＋過去分詞を使った英文をいくつか挙げておきましょう。

I seem to have caught a cold.
→風邪を引いちゃったみたい。
She finally seems to have accustomed herself to it.
→彼女はようやく慣れてきたようですね。
Lately he seems to have run out of motivation.
→彼は最近やる気を失くしてしまったようだ。
As I've gotten older, I seem to have become more tearful.
→年を取るにつれて、どうも涙もろくなったようです。
He seems to have thinned out a little around the hairline.
→彼、生え際のあたりが少し薄くなったみたいだね。
