穴埋め英作文1・2・3（作文162回）　終わりにしよう・諦めも肝心・英語が話せる～

水曜日は「英作文」の日。日々の生活の中でよく使う言い回しを英語で表現してみましょう。練習は三つのパート（穴埋め問題）に分かれています。それでは始めましょう。

【Part 1】
日本語の意味になるようにカッコに適切な語を入れてください。

→終わりにしよう。

2. We have (　　　) hopes for him.
→我々は彼に大いに期待している。

→すべての努力が無駄に終わった。

1. wrap upは「（仕事や会議などを）終える」という意味。（例）Let's wrap things up for tonight.「今夜は終わりにしましょう」。
2. have high hopes for ～「～を大いに期待する」。（例）I don't want to get my hopes up too high only to be disappointed.「がっかりするだけだから、あまり期待したくないんだ」。
3. come to nothing「何にもならない、無に帰する」。（例）A month's work went to nothing.「一ヶ月分の仕事が無駄になった」。

【Part 2】
aとbが同じ意味になるようにカッコに適切な語を入れてください。

4. a. Sometimes you just have to give up.
b. Sometimes giving in is the (　　　) thing.
→時には諦めも肝心だよ。

5. a. Could you turn that way, please?

→あっちを向いてもらえますか？

5.「向く」はface「顔を向ける」でも表現できます。（例）Which way does the window face?「その窓はどっち向き？」。

日本語の意味になるようにカッコに適切な語を入れてください。最初の文字が与えられています。

→英語が話せるようになるには、毎日少しずつ練習しないといけないのはわかってるけど、実際にはなかなかね。

【解答】realize, practice, reality, hard

【解説】
I realize that ～「～だと理解する、悟る」。「練習」はpracticeですね。the reality is that ～「実際（現実）は～である」。「なかなか」をvery hard「とても大変」で表現しています。Ideally, you should study English every day if you want to learn to speak it, but in reality that's very hard to do.でも同じような意味になります。

英文1～3をリピートしましょう。

英文4～5（a, b）をリピートしましょう。

come to nothingを使った英文をいくつか挙げておきましょう。

Our plans came to nothing, thanks to you.
→お前のせいで、計画がおじゃんになっちゃっただろ。
All your work will come to nothing if you work yourself sick.
→働きすぎて体を壊したら、何にもならないよ。
I did all that hard work and it came to nothing. What a waste!
→一生懸命頑張ったのにだめだった。ああ、むなしい！
I was sure my plan would be a success, but it came to nothing.
→計画はきっと成功すると思っていたが、失敗に終わった。
That grocery store tried to attract customers with a big sale, but it all came to nothing.
→そのスーパーは客の数を増やそうと大売り出しをしたが、空振りに終わった。
