木曜日は「英文法」の日。Practice before theory.「理屈より実践」。さまざな例文を参考にして、使える英文法を身につけましょう。今回も基本動詞Doを取り上げます。

◆Doを使いこなす！ (2)◆
日常会話の中でよく用いられる例文を五つ挙げてみます。

【リピーティング】
英文11～15をリピートしましょう。

11. The fresh air will do you good.
→新鮮な空気は体にいいよ。
12. I don't know what to do with this tool.
→この道具で何をするのかな。
13. You can't do without friends.
→友達なしではやっていけないよ。
14. How can you do away with this oversize garbage?
→この粗大ごみをどうやって処分するの？
15. He must have something to do with the matter.
→彼はその件に関わっているに違いない。




▽解説・穴埋め

【解説】
11. do ～ goodで「～に役に立つ」という意味。（例）Talking about it might do you some good.「それについて話すといいかもしれないよ」。
12. do with ～「～をどうにかする」。（例）What can I do with that strong-minded girl?「あの勝ち気な女の子にはまいったよ」。
13.「～をなしですませる」はdo without ～で表現します。（例）I don't know what I'd do without you.「あなたがいなかったらどうしていいかわからない」。
14. do away with ～「～を処分する、除く」。（例）She decided on contact lenses and did away with her glasses.「彼女は眼鏡をやめて、コンタクトレンズにした」。
15. have something to do with ～「～と関係（関わり）がある」。疑問文の場合はanythingを使います。（例）Does your visit have anything to do with business?「今回は仕事でいらしたのですか？」。

【穴埋め】
日本語の意味なるようにカッコに適切な語を入れてください。

【解説】
16. no goodを使えば「役に立たない」という意味になります。（例）Negative thoughts will do you no good.「否定的な考えは何の役にも立ちません」。
17. What did I do with ～「～はどうしたんだっけ？」。（例）Say you won a million dollars in the lottery. What would you do with the money?「宝くじで100万ドル当たったとしたら、そのお金どうする？」。「老眼鏡」はreading glassesと言います。
18. so ～ that ...で「とても～なので...」。do without lunch「昼食なしですます」。（例）This actor has an excellent presence. Directors can't do without him.「この役者はいい味を出しているよね。監督たちにとってはなくてはならない存在だ」。
19. do away with formalities「堅苦しいことはなしにする」。似たような例文を一つ。All right everyone, let's not stand on ceremony tonight. Cheers!「それでは皆さん、今夜は無礼講で行きましょう。乾杯！」。
20. have nothing to do with ～「～とは無関係」。（例）If you end up regretting it, it's got nothing to do with me.「それを後悔することになっても、僕には関係ないからね」。

Doを使った例文をさらに追加しておきます。

I can do without your help.
→君の助けがなくても大丈夫。
Crying false tears won't do you any good.
→嘘泣きしてもだめだよ。
We'll have to make do with what we've got.
→あるもので間に合わせなくてはいけない。
I've never seen her do up her hair that way.
→彼女がああいうふうに髪を束ねたのを見たことがない。
Trying it without thinking won't do you any good.
→考えずにやってもだめだよ。
Sorry, but that problem has nothing to do with me.
→悪いけど、その問題は僕には関係がないんだ。
Let's do away with all this pretense and really talk.
→ もったいぶってないで、さっさと言っちゃいなよ。
Hurrying too much will do you more harm than good.
→ 慌ててもいいことはない。
