木曜日は「英文法」の日。Practice before theory.「理屈より実践」。さまざな例文を参考にして、使える英文法を身につけましょう。今回も基本動詞Putを取り上げます。

◆Doを使いこなす！ (1)◆
日常会話の中でよく用いられる例文を五つ挙げてみます。

【リピーティング】
英文1～5をリピートしましょう。

1. How are you doing these days?
→最近、調子はどう？
2. This coat will do. It's not so cold tonight.
→このコートで大丈夫。今夜はそれほど寒くないから。
3. I did well on the test.　
→試験はよくできたよ。
4. I'm done for the day.
→今日は終わりなんだ。
5. Why don't you do it yourself?
→自分でやったらどうなの？




▽解説・穴埋め

【解説】
1. Howとdoing（自動詞）の組み合わせに注目。（例）How's everyone in your family doing?「家族の皆さんはお元気ですか？」。
2. この場合のdoは「間に合う、十分である」という意味。（例）That will do.「それで大丈夫です」。
3. do wellで「よくできる、うまく行く」という意味に。（例）You look like you're doing well.「元気そうだね」。
4. be done「終わりになった、すんだ」。I'm done. Could you clear my tray?「食べ終わりました。トレイを片付けてもらえますか？」。
5. do ～「～をする（他動詞）」。Five minutes of intensive practice will do wonders.「5分間の集中練習は驚くほど効果があります」。

【穴埋め】
日本語の意味なるようにカッコに適切な語を入れてください。

6. lower back「腰」。How's your knee doing?と言えば「膝の具合はどう？」という意味に。
7. Anyとdoの組み合わせに注目。（例）Any color will do.「どんな色でもいいですよ」。
8. seem to ～「～のようだ」。do wellの例文をもう一つ。He's a quick learner. He'll be doing well in no time.「彼は覚えが速いから。すぐにできるようになる」。
9. Consider it done.「それを終わったと見なす」で「承知しました」の意味に。（例）You've got to get it done before anything else.「他の何よりも先にそれを片付けないと」。
10. do things at one's own paceの文字通りの意味は「物事を自分のペースでやる」。（例）Just do it at your own pace.「マイペースでやればいい。」

→僕の方が終わったら直ぐに君を手伝うよ。
I want you to do your best to answer me.
→なるべく返事をください。
Everything should be done in moderation.
→何事も度を越さないようにすべきだ。
The team's doing well under the new coach.
→新しいコーチの下でチームは頑張っている。

→期待に応えられるように頑張ります。
Could you put the laundry away? I'm done folding it.
→洗濯物をしまってくれる？たたんでおいたから。
I don't need a motorcycle. A regular bicycle will do just fine.
→オートバイは必要ありません。普通の自転車でいいです。
