木曜日は「英文法」の日。Practice before theory.「理屈より実践」。さまざな例文を参考にして、使える英文法を身につけましょう。今回は基本動詞Putを取り上げます。

◆Putを使いこなす！ (1)◆
日常会話の中でよく用いられる例文を五つ挙げてみます。

【リピーティング】
英文1～5をリピートしましょう。

1. I think I put the stapler here.
→ここにホチキスを置いたと思うんだけど。
2. I guess that's one way to put it.
→そうとも言うね。
3. Just put it in the microwave and enjoy.
→チンして食べて。
4. You'd better put on some sunscreen.
→日焼け止めクリームを塗った方がいいよ。
5. Don't put it off. Do it right now.
→先に延ばさないで。今すぐやりなさい。




▽解説・穴埋め

【解説】
1. putの基本的意味は「置く」。（例）Where are my glasses? I put them somewhere.「眼鏡はどこだ？どこかに置いたんだけど」。「ホチキス」はstapler、「ホチキスの針」はstapleと言います。
2. この場合のputは「言い表す」という意味。（例）Well, if you put it that way, sure.「まあ、そう言われてみれば、そうだね」。
3. put it in ～「それを～の中に入れる」。microwave「電子レンジ」。（例）Here's lunch. Nuke it before you eat.「お昼よ。食べる前にチンしてね」。
4.「塗る」をput onで表現しています。（例）You ought to put on a lot of sunscreen to keep off the UV rays.「紫外線を防ぐためにたくさん日焼け止めを塗るべきね」。
5. put off「延期する」。（例）Half-baked reforms like this just put the problem off.「このような中途半端な改革では問題を先送するだけだ」。

【穴埋め】
日本語の意味なるようにカッコに適切な語を入れてください。

→どこにテレビのリモコンを置いたのか忘れちゃった。

→口では説明できない。

【解説】
6.「リモコン」は和製英語。英語ではremote / remote controlと言います。（例）Do you have any idea where I put my keys?「どこに鍵を置いたかわかるかい？」。
7. can't be put into words「言葉にならない」で「口では説明できない」を表現しています。（例）I can't put into words how I feel right now.「今は何とも言えない気持ちですね」。
8. go rotten / bad「腐る」。fridge「冷蔵庫（refrigerator）」。（例）Maybe I should put it in a box to send it.「送るのに箱に入れるべきかな」。
9. put onには「身に付ける、着る」という意味もあります。put on some weight「少し太る（少し体重を身に付ける）」。（例）You look like you've put on a few pounds.「少し太ったみたいだね」。
10. put off ～ing「～することを延ばす」。（例）Language ability disappears fast when you put off studying.「語学力ってちょっと怠けるとすぐに衰える」。
