木曜日は「英文法」の日。Practice before theory.「理屈より実践」。さまざな例文を参考にして、使える英文法を身につけましょう。今回も基本動詞Standを取り上げます。

日常会話の中でよく用いられる例文を五つ挙げてみます。

【リピーティング】
英文11～15をリピートしましょう。

11. WHO stands for World Health Organization.
→WHOとは世界保健機関のことである。
12. Stand still for a second.
→ちょっとじっと立ってて。
13. This stain really stands out.
→この染みは本当に目立つ。
14. He has to learn to stand on his own two feet.
→彼は自立することを覚えなくてはいけない。
15. I don't intend to stand in your way.
→君の邪魔をするつもりはない。

【解説】
11. stand for ～「～を表す」。（例）What does BTW stand for?「BTWとはBy the wayの略です」。
12. stand still「じっと立っている」。この後、On three. One, two, three. Cheese!「三つ数えるからね。一二の三。チーズ！」と言って、写真を撮ります。
13.「目立つ」はstand outで表現できます。（例）I don't like to stand out in a crowd.「人込みで目立ちたくない」。
14. stand on ～の「～（の上）に立つ」。stand on one's own two feetで「自立する、一人前になる」という意味。（例）That's my foot you're standing on.「僕の足を踏んでますよ」。
15. stand in one's way「～の邪魔をする」。（例）Don't stand in my way.「僕の邪魔をしないでくれ」。

16.「頭文字」はinitialですね。（例）It's a nickname from my initials.「イニシャルからついたニックネームです」。
17. sweat「汗をかく（動詞）」。stand stillを使った例文をもう一つ。I wish I could make time stand still.「今、時間を止められたらいいのに」。
18. have a strong need to stand out「目立とういう強い欲求を持っている」。stand outを使った例文をもう一つ。Do any of the events of this year stand out in your mind?「今年、印象に残った出来事はありますか？」。
19. not stand on ceremony「形式張らない、堅苦しく振る舞わない」で「無礼講」を表現。You don't have to stand on ceremony with me.「そんな他人行儀な話し方はしないでくれよ」。
20. stand in the way of ～「～の邪魔をする」。（例）I worry whether I'm getting / standing in the way of your progress on this project.「私、あなたたちのプロジェクトの足を引っ張ってるんじゃないかって心配なの」。
