穴埋め英作文1・2・3（作文159回）　あの女優・照り返し・前首相の支持率～

水曜日は「英作文」の日。日々の生活の中でよく使う言い回しを英語で表現してみましょう。練習は三つのパート（穴埋め問題）に分かれています。それでは始めましょう。

【Part 1】
日本語の意味になるようにカッコに適切な語を入れてください。

1. That actress is very (　　　).
→あの女優さんはテレビ映りがいい。

2. (　　　) it as spicy as you can.
→できるだけ辛くしてください。

3. My (　　　) ache when it gets cold.
→気温が下がると節々が痛む。

【解説】
1.「テレビ映りがいい」はtelegenic、「写真写りがいい」はphotogenicと言います。（例）She's not very photogenic. The picture doesn't look like her at all.「彼女は写真写り悪いな。写真と実物で全然違う」。
2. Make it as ～ as you can.で「できるだけ～にする」を表現。spicyの代わりにhotも使えます。（例）Make it as sweet as possible.「できるだけ甘くしてください」。
3. joints「関節（複数形）」で「節々」を表現。 動詞acheの使い方にも注目。（例）Your joints ache when you catch a cold, don't they?「風邪を引くと節々が痛くなるよね」。

【Part 2】
aとbが同じ意味になるようにカッコに適切な語を入れてください。

4. a. The reflection of the sunlight is really bright.

→太陽の照り返しが強い。

5. a. I cried until I had no more tears.

→涙が涸れるまで泣いた。

4.「太陽の照り返しが強い」をglare「まぶしい光」にa lot ofを付けて表現しています。（例）The glare is making it impossible to see.「まぶしくて見えない」。
5. no more tears「もう涙も出ない」とgo dry「乾く」の使い方に注目。so muchの後にはthatが略されています。

日本語の意味になるようにカッコに適切な語を入れてください。最初の文字が与えられています。

→前首相の支持率が支持率だっただけに、現首相の支持率は際立って見える。

【解答】current, rating, remarkable, note

【解説】
「現」をcurrent、「前」をformerで表現。「支持率」はsupport ratingと言います。all the more remarkableは「なおさら（ますます）目立つ」という意味。note「注目する、気づく（動詞）」。次のようにも言えます。The former prime minister's support rating makes that of the current prime minister all the more remarkable.

→ボロボロになるまでお気に入りのジーンズを履いていた。
I pleaded with him until he agreed to take on the job.
→彼を拝み倒して、この仕事を引き受けてもらったんだ。
I gradually chipped away at my work until it was all done.
→こつこつやって、その仕事を片づけた。
