木曜日は「英文法」の日。Practice before theory.「理屈より実践」。さまざな例文を参考にして、使える英文法を身につけましょう。今回は基本動詞Standを取り上げます。

◆Standを使いこなす！ (1)◆
日常会話の中でよく用いられる例文を五つ挙げてみます。

【リピーティング】
英文1～5をリピートしましょう。

1. Don't just stand there. Do something!
→そこに立っているだけじゃなくて、何かしろよ！
2. I can't stand it anymore.
→もう我慢ができない。
3. My legs fell asleep and I couldn't stand up.
→足がしびれて立ち上がれなかった。
4. See that tall man standing by the window?
→窓のそばに立っているあの背の高い男性が見える？
5. I don't want to stand in line for it.
→並びたくないよ。




▽解説・穴埋め

【解説】
1. standの基本的意味は「立つ」。（例）Don't stand in front of the bronze statue.「その銅像の前に立たないで」。
2. standには「我慢する、耐える」という意味もあります。（例）I've reached my limit. I can't stand this noise anymore.「限界だ。この騒音にはもうこれ以上耐えられない」。
3. stand up「立ち上がる」。Stand up straight.「背筋を真っすぐにして立ちなさい」。
4. stand by ～「～のそばに立つ」。（例）How can everyone stand by and watch while this goes on?「このような事が起きてるのに、なぜみんな何にもしないで見ていられるのだろう？」。
5. stand in line for ～「～のために列に並ぶ」。standの代わりにwaitを使って、People were waiting in line at the Italian restaurant.と言えば、「そのイタリアンの店には行列ができていた」という意味になります。

【穴埋め】
日本語の意味なるようにカッコに適切な語を入れてください。

→朝のラッシュアワーには耐えられない。

【解説】
6.「立場にいる」をwhere you stand「どこに立っているのか」で表現しています。（例）I want to know where I stand with her. 「彼女が僕のことをどう思っているのか知りたいんだ」。「立場」はyour positionとも言います。
7.「ラッシュアワー」は英語でもrush hourと言います。stand「我慢する」を使った例文をもう一つ。I can't stand how serious he is.「あいつ、生真面目にもほどがあるよ」。
8. stand upには「すっぽかす」という意味もありますので覚えておきましょう。（例）It's your fault for standing her up.「彼女とのデートをすっぽかしたお前が悪い」。
9. stand by each other「お互いの側にいる」で「一緒にいる」を表現。through thick and thin「良い時も悪い時も」。Let's stay / stick together no matter what happens.でも同じような意味になります。
10. stand in line for an autograph「サインを求めて列に並ぶ」。この場合の「サイン」はsignではなくautographと言います。（例）It's worth standing in line in the rain to get these concert tickets. 「このコンサートのチケットを手に入れるためなら雨の中で並ぶ価値があるよ」。

My father can't stand dishonesty.
→父は曲がったことが大嫌いだ。
How much are standing room tickets?
→立ち見席はいくらですか？
That building standing over there is huge.
→あそこに立っている建物は巨大だ。
She was standing next to me just a minute ago.
→ついさっきまで彼女は僕の隣に立ってたんだよ。
I get nervous standing in front of a large crowd.
→大勢の前に立つと上がってしまう。
Is there a kind of food you just can't stand to eat?
→嫌いな食べ物はありますか？
My knee makes a popping sound when I stand up.
→立つと膝がポキって鳴るんだ。
I can't stand his constant fawning over his senior coworkers.
→あいつは上司にごまをすってばかりいるから嫌なんだ。
She's angry for good reason. You never should have stood her up.
→彼女が怒るのも無理はない。すっぽかすべきではなかった。
Take your hands out of your pockets and stand up straight when you walk.
→ポケットから手を出して、背筋を伸ばして歩きなさい。
