木曜日は「英文法」の日。Practice before theory.「理屈より実践」。さまざな例文を参考にして、使える英文法を身につけましょう。今回も基本動詞Seeを取り上げます。

◆Seeを使いこなす！ (2)◆
日常会話の中でよく用いられる例文を五つ挙げてみます。

【リピーティング】
英文11～15をリピートしましょう。

11. We went to the airport to see off my father.
→父を見送りに空港へ行った。
12. I'd like to go see sumo live sometime.
→いつか生で相撲を見てみたい。
13. I'll see to it that he gets the message.
→必ず彼に伝言を伝えますので。
14. That player has seen better days.
→あの選手にも全盛期があったんだよ。
15. I'd better check to see if I have a fever.
→熱があるかどうか調べてみた方がいいな。




▽解説・穴埋め

【解説】
11.「見送る」はsee offで表現します。（例）Sorry I can't see you off at the terminal.「ターミナルで見送りができなくてごめんね」。
12. go (and) see ～「～を見に行く」。（例）Let's go (and) see that movie tonight.「今夜、あの映画を見に行こうよ」。
13. see to it that ～で「～するように取り計らう」という意味。ここでは「必ず」と訳しています。（例）See to it that you do it by five.「必ず5時までにやっておいてね」。
14. see better days「より良い日を見る」で「もっと良い時があった」という意味になります。（例）This condo has seen better days.「このマンションも古くなったな」。
15. see if ～で「～かどうか調べる」という意味。（例）I'd better turn it on to see if it works.「動くかどうかスイッチを入れてみた方がいいね」。feverの代わりにtemperatureも使えます。

【穴埋め】
日本語の意味なるようにカッコに適切な語を入れてください。

→見送りにわざわざここまで来てくれてありがとう。

16. come all the way here「わざわざ（はるばる）ここまで来る」。see me offの語順に注意。（例）Will you come to the airport to see me off?「見送りに空港まで来てくれる？」。
17. 会話ではgo and seeのandがよく省略されます。（例）Should I go see a doctor?「医者に診てもらった方がいいかな？」。convenient「都合の良い」。
18. see to it that ～の表現パターンを使えるようにしておきましょう。（例） This time I really have to see to it that I don't fail.「今度こそ失敗しないようにしないと」。
19. marriage「結婚、結婚生活」。see better daysの例文をもう一つ。（例）This car has seen better days. It's time to buy a new one.「この車も古くなったな。そろそろ新しいのにするか」。
20. see if it fitsで「フィットするかどうか見る（調べる）」。see if ～の例文をもう一つ。Take a chance and see if it pays off.「一か八かやってみろよ」。

→彼は彼女を見送りに駅に来なかった。
I can't wait to see the results of today's test.
→今日の試験結果を見るのが待ち遠しい。
How do you see the current world situation?
→現在の世界状況を君はどう見るかね。
I'll see about it. It might take some time, though.
→何とかしましょう。時間がかかるかもしれませんが。
I'd hate to see all your hard work go up in smoke.
→君の努力が水の泡になるのを見たくない。
She walked to the station with me and saw me off.
→彼女は僕と一緒に歩いて駅に行き、見送ってくれた。
