穴埋め英作文1・2・3（作文157回）　刺がある・目が悪い・線路に人が～

水曜日は「英作文」の日。日々の生活の中でよく使う言い回しを英語で表現してみましょう。練習は三つのパート（穴埋め問題）に分かれています。それでは始めましょう。

【Part 1】
日本語の意味になるようにカッコに適切な語を入れてください。

1. She has a (　　　) tongue.
→彼女の言葉には刺がある。

2. He's acting (　　　) as usual.
→彼は相変わらず腰が低いね。

3. Do you have a college (　　　)?
→君は大卒？

【解説】
1. have a sharp tongue「毒舌である」。She speaks with stinging words.とも言えます。stinging words「棘のある言葉」。
2. He's acting modest as usual.の文字通りの意味は「彼はいつものように謙虚に振る舞う」ですね。 humble and polite「謙虚で礼儀正しい」を使ってHe's (as) humble and polite as always.でも「腰が低い」が表現できます。
3. have a college degree「大学の学位を持っている」で「大卒」を表現。（例）Where did you get your diploma?「どこで学位を取ったの？」。

【Part 2】
aとbが同じ意味になるようにカッコに適切な語を入れてください。

4. a. My eyes are bad, so I can't read fine print.
b. I can't read small print because of poor (　　　).
→目が悪いから、小さな文字が読めないんだ。

5. a. No matter what I do, I can't get rid of this anger.
b. This anger won't go (　　　), no matter what I do.

【解説】
4.「目が悪い」をpoor eyesight「視力の弱さ」で表現している点に注目。（例）I used to have twenty-twenty vision, but now I need glasses.「かつては視力は正常だったが、今は眼鏡が必要なんだ」。「小さな文字」はfine printと言います。
5. get rid of ～「～を取り除く」とgo away「消え失せる」。この二つの言い回しに注目。（例）You can't make it go away just by saying sorry.「ごめんだけではすまされないよ」。

【Part 3】
日本語の意味になるようにカッコに適切な語を入れてください。最初の文字が与えられています。

6. They've ( s　　　) the trains because somebody ( w　　　) onto the railway, and at the moment there's no ( s　　　) they'll ( s　　　) up again.
→線路に人が立ち入ったせいで、運転を見合わせている。今のところ再開の目処は立っていない。

【解答】stopped, walked, sign, start

【解説】
stop the trains「電車を止める」で「運転を見合わせる」、walk onto ～「～に足を踏み入れる」で「～に立ち入る」、there's no sign ～「～の気配（兆し）はない」で「目処は立っていない」、start up again「再び始める」で「再開」を表現。walkの代わりにstepも使えます。関連した例文を二つ。No Trespassing!「立ち入り禁止」、Do Not Enter!「入るな！（進入禁止）」。The trains are stopped because somebody stepped onto the railway, and there's no sign they'll start up again any time soon.でも同じ意味になります。
