水曜日は「英作文」の日。日々の生活の中でよく使う言い回しを英語で表現してみましょう。練習は三つのパート（穴埋め問題）に分かれています。それでは始めましょう。
【Part 1】
日本語の意味になるようにカッコに適切な語を入れてください。
1. My nose is ( ).
→鼻水が止まらない。
2. This is a ( ) of a show aired last week.
→これは先週放送された番組の再放送だ。
3. I sang my ( ) out at karaoke last night.
→昨日の夜は思い切りカラオケで歌った。

【解説】
1. この場合のrunは「流れる、垂れる」という意味。I have a runny nose.とも言います。
2. rerunが「再放送、再上映」に当たる語です。（例）Are they still showing reruns of that TV drama?「そのテレビドラマって、まだ再放送してるの？」。showとairedの間にはthat wasが省略されています。
3. sing one's heart outで「思う存分歌う」という意味。（例）We played our hearts out but still lost the game.「全力でプレーしたが、それでも試合に負けてしまった」。

aとbが同じ意味になるようにカッコに適切な語を入れてください。

4.「～がありますか？」をhaveを使って言い換えています。（例）This sauce doesn't have any body.「このソース、こくがないのよね」。prerequisite「必要（必須）条件」。
5. have a weakness for ～は「～に目がない」、have a passion for ～は「～が大好き」という意味。（例）I could never resist chocolate.「チョコレートには目がないんだ」。

→特に応援したい候補者がいないので、消去法で一番欠点の少ない人に投票した。

【解答】candidates, enthusiastic, elimination, least
【解説】
candidate「候補者」。get enthusiastic about ～「～に熱狂する」で「応援する」を表現。use the process of eliminationが「消去法」に当たる言い回し。the least bad one「最も悪くない一人（候補者）」。次のようにも言い換えられます。I wasn't particularly enthused about any of the candidates, so I eliminated the worst ones until I was left with the least bad one.

英文1～3をリピートしましょう。

英文4～5（a, b）をリピートしましょう。
4. a: Are there any prerequisites for this course?

leastを使った英文をいくつか挙げておきましょう。
Broiled fish is my least favorite dish.
→焼き魚が一番嫌いなんだ。
It's the least you can do to help your family.
→せめて家族を助けることくらいはしないとね。
Keeping your promises is the least you should do.
→何はともあれ、約束だけは守ってください。
The least you could do would be to say that you're sorry.
→せめて「ごめん」くらいは言えばいいのに。
There sure aren't many people here today. This is the least crowded time.
→今日、ここはがらがら。この時間帯って一番空いてるんだね。
また明日。See you tomorrow.
