音読で英語の筋トレ（音読157回）　授業・公園・母親

第157回

月曜日は「音読」の日。早速、英語の筋トレを始めましょう。英文1～3と和訳を読み、音声を聞いてから、繰り返し音読してください。

【音読】
1. 授業

This computer class is too advanced.
I can't keep up, so I'm going to quit.
I want to study at my own pace.

このコンピューターの授業はレベルが高過ぎる。
ついて行けないから、やめるつもり。
自分のペースで勉強したいから。



2. 公園

I walked home through the park last night.
It was pitch-dark.
I was scared to death, but I made it home OK.

昨日の夜、公園を通って家に帰ったんだ。
真っ暗で。
死ぬほど怖かったけど、無事に家に着いたよ。



3. 母親

She would make a good mother.
She has a lot of patience.
And she's very understanding.

彼女はいい母親になるだろうな。
忍耐強いし。
とても思いやりがあるから。




▽解説・練習

【解説】
1. advanced「上級の」、keep up「ついて行く」、quit「やめる」。「自分のペースで、マイペースで」はat one's own paceと言います。atを使う点に注目。（例）Let me eat at my own pace.「自分のペースで食べさせてよ」。

《発音アドバイス》
too, advanced, can't, keep, quitを特に強調します。want, study, own, paceにストレスを置き、強弱リズムをを意識して言ってみましょう。

2. through「～を通り抜けて」、pitch-dark「真っ暗な」。be scared to deathが「死ぬほど怖い」に当たる言い回し。make it home「家に着く」。（例）Do you think we can make it to the one-o'clock train.「1時の電車に間に合うと思う？」。

《発音アドバイス》
walked, home, through, park, last, nightの母音を意識して伸ばすようにしましょう。pitch darkを強調。scared, death, made, home, OKにストレスを置きます（強弱リズム）。

3. make a good mother「いい母親になる」。（例）Those two will make a nice couple.「あの二人はいいカップルになる」。patience「忍耐、我慢」、understanding「思いやりがある、ものがわかる」。

《発音アドバイス》
特に強調する語を意識して言ってみましょう。ポイントは、good, mother, lot, patience, understandingです。

【実践練習】
出だしの語を見て英文1～3を思い出しながら言ってみましょう。

1. 授業 …… This - I - I
2. 公園 …… I - It - I
3. 母親 …… She - She - And

今日のワンポイント

次の例文を参考にして、make it to ～の使い方を覚えましょう。

She made it to the advanced level in English.
→彼女の英語力は上級者並になった。
I won't be able to make it to the party Friday.
→金曜日のパーティーには出られません。
I can't make it to the drinking session tonight.
→今夜の飲み会には行けないな。
It's not too likely that I'll be able to make it to your place.
→君の所へ行けけるかどうかは微妙だな。
I couldn't make it to the award ceremony, so my colleague went in my place.
→授賞式に行けなかったので、同僚が代わりに行った。
