木曜日は「英文法」の日。Practice before theory.「理屈より実践」。さまざな例文を参考にして、使える英文法を身につけましょう。今回は基本動詞Seeを取り上げます。

◆Seeを使いこなす！ (1)◆
日常会話の中でよく用いられる例文を五つ挙げてみます。

【リピーティング】
英文1～5をリピートしましょう。

1. I can't see well without my glasses.
→メガネをかけないとよく見えないんだ。
2. OK, I'll see you there at 9.
→じゃあ、そこで9時にね。
3. I see your point.
→君の言いたいことはわかる。
4. I saw them walking arm in arm.
→彼らが腕を組んで歩いているのを見かけた。
5. Let's see, somewhere around here.
→えーと、このあたりだよな。




▽解説・穴埋め

【解説】
1.「見える」がseeの基本となる意味。can't see wellで「よく見えない」。（例）I can't see ahead.「前方が見えない」。
2. see「会う」。（例）OK, see later.「じゃあ、後でね」、I look forward to seeing you again.「また会えるのを楽しみにしています」。
3. seeには「わかる、理解する」という意味もあります。（例）I can't see the difference.「違いがわからない」。
4. see ～ ...ingで「～が...しているのを見る」という意味になります。（例）I saw her shopping in the mall.「ショッピングセンターで彼女が買い物をしているのを見かけた」。
5. Let's see.が「えーと」に当たる言い回しです。（例）Let's see, where's the wallet?「えーと、財布はどこだっけ？」。Let me see.とも言います。

【穴埋め】
日本語の意味なるようにカッコに適切な語を入れてください。

【解説】
6. I can hardly see with my glasses fogging up like this.とも言えます。次の言い回しも覚えておきましょう。I can't see a thing with all this glare.「眩しくて全然見えない」。
7. この場合のseeの意味は「（医者に）診てもらう」。It's time to ～の文字通りの意味は「～する時間である」。（例）I'm so busy I don't have time to see a doctor this week.「今週は忙しいから医者に診てもらう時間はない」。
8. reasoning「言い分、論法（理屈）」。can't see「わからない」を使った例文を一つ。I can't see why you say so.「どうしてそう言うのかわからない」。
9. 見かけた時点でジョギングしていたのでjoggingと進行形にしています。（例）I saw a monkey doing tricks yesterday.「昨日猿回しを見た」。
10. この場合のLet's (me) see ～は「～を見せて」。what you've got「君が持っているもの」で「君の力」の意味に。（例）Enough talk. Let's see some action.「能書きはいいから。早くやってくれよ（行動を見せて）」。

→彼とは長いこと会っていない。

→運転免許証を拝見できますか？

He can't see beyond his own nose.
→彼には先のことが見通せない。

→反対の方？挙手をお願いします。
It was such a hard bump that I saw stars.
→かなりひどくぶつけたから、目から火が出たよ。
Uh-oh, a blackout. It's so dark I can't see a thing.
→あっ、停電だ。真っ暗で何も見えないよ。

→前に会った時より、少し太った？
Today I saw a suspicious character walking around campus.
→今日、怪しい奴がキャンパスを歩き回ってるのを見かけた。
