穴埋め英作文1・2・3（作文153回）　早い者勝ち・参考にしてみるよ・だいたい写真より～

第153回

水曜日は「英作文」の日。日々の生活の中でよく使う言い回しを英語で表現してみましょう。練習は三つのパート（穴埋め問題）に分かれています。それでは始めましょう。

【Part 1】
日本語の意味になるようにカッコに適切な語を入れてください。

1. First come, first (　　　).
→早い者勝ち。

2. I shouldn't have (　　　) it.
→無茶するんじゃなかったな。

3. I feel a little (　　　) after that long hot bath.
→長湯して少しのぼせちゃったよ。

【解説】
1. First come, first served.が「早い者勝ち、先着順」に当たる言い回し。（例） The new smartphones will be sold on a first-come, first-served basis here.「新しいスマートフォンはここで先着順に販売されます」。
2. overdo「やり過ぎる、無理をする」。（例）There's no need to overdo it.「無理をすることはない」。
3.「のぼせる」をfeel dizzy「めまいがする」で表現。feel lightheaded「頭がふらふらする」も使えます。The long hot bath I just took left me feeling lightheaded.でも同じような意味になります。

【Part 2】
aとbが同じ意味になるようにカッコに適切な語を入れてください。

4. a. Thanks. I'll look through it.
b. Thanks. I'm sure I'll find it (　　　).
→参考にしてみるよ。

5. a. Any car is fine with me, as long as it runs.
b. I don't (　　　) what kind of car it is, as long as it runs.
→車なんて走れば何でもいいんだよ。

4.「参考にする」を look through ～「～に目を通す」、I'm sure I'll find it useful.「きっと役に立つと思う」で表現。（例）This website has a lot of useful information.「このホームページはとても参考になる」。
5.「何でもいい」をI don't careで表現しています。I don't care what people think. I do things my own way.「人の考えなんかどうでもいい。自分のやり方でやるだけさ」。as long as ～「～する限りは、～さえすれば」。

日本語の意味になるようにカッコに適切な語を入れてください。最初の文字が与えられています。

6. A lot of things aren't as ( g　　　) as the photos you ( s　　　). But that street ( s　　　) was much ( b　　　) than the photos.
→だいたい写真より実物が劣る場合が多いけど、あの街並みは写真よりずっとよかった。

【解説】
not as good as ～で「～ほどよくない」の意味になります。the photosとyou seeの間にはthat / whichが省略。street scene「街並」。「ずっといい」をmuch better than ～で表現。muchの代わりにa lotも使えます。（例）This tastes a lot better than it looks.「これ見た目よりずっとおいしい」。The picture of that street scene wasn't as good as the real thing. Usually it's the other way around.でも同じような意味になります。the other way around「逆」。

【リピーティング】
英文1～3をリピートしましょう。

1. First come, first served.
2. I shouldn't have overdone it.
3. I feel a little dizzy after that long hot bath.



英文4～5（a, b）をリピートしましょう。

4. a. Thanks. I'll look through it.
b. Thanks. I'm sure I'll find it useful.

as long as ～を使った英文をいくつか挙げておきましょう。

I don't care about the quality, as long as I can use them.
→質にはこだわらないよ、使えるなら。
I don't mind criticism, as long as it's the constructive kind.
→建設的なものなら、批判されても気にはならない。
There are lots of jobs out there, as long as you're not too particular.
→えり好みしなければ、仕事はたくさんあるよ。
You can use my car as long as you fill it up with gas when you're done.
→使い終わったら満タンにしてくれるなら僕の車を使ってもいいよ。
I should have the right to buy whatever I want, as long as it's with my own money.
→自分のお金で買うんだから、何を買おうと私の自由でしょ。
